Sore mouth!
My Syrian hamster Cotton was chewing on her bar earlier ( only one in particular, weird right?) and my mum walked in, she got freaked and tried pulling back in a jump, of course her mouth was around the bar and she seemed to hurt herself. She squeaked once and was going a weird movement with her jaw. We have observed her for about an hour now. Her bottom lip is swollen and she doesn't seem to be pouching any of her food, instead she is just carrying it in her mouth. Her drinking was a lot less vigorous than usual and she seems a lot more jumpy. Her nose also looks a little cut. What do you think this could be and would it be worth while taking her to the vets tomorrow? She doesn't seem to be in pain as such, just careful when using her mouth.. Thanks guys x

Re: Sore mouth!
Maybe her tooth punctured her lip? I don't have an answer but I hope she is fine.
If it were me, I'd just watch her eat. Can you give her a hard treat she loves and see how she does? Like a piece of carrot or peanut in shell?

Re: Sore mouth!
I was thinking that, the bottom lip looks very red and swollen. I gave her so dry food, cucumber and carot, she didn't pouch anything but the dry food, which she spat out straight away. She is sleeping right now an seems calm, I will observe her some more when she awakes! xx

Re: Sore mouth!
If she's not able to eat because of her tooth, I'd take her into the vet. Poor thing, must have been scared!

Re: Sore mouth!
It was weird as she isn't usually jumpy like that. She loved cuddles and isn't scared of new people:/ I think my mum banged the door loudly so maybe that noise scared her? I'm going to have a look at her now and see if it's improved, she seems more relaxed x

Re: Sore mouth!
Just checked on her, she is a lot calmer but her mouth and nose is red and swollen, I'm going to take her to the vets in the morning to get her checked over, better safe than sorry x

Re: Sore mouth!
Yeah issues with teeth really do need to be seen by the vet if she can't eat. Try offering her some soft foods, like porridge and baby food, if she's hungry.
