Default Help! Hammy with poorly foot?

Hey everyone!

So I just got Gizmo out to have a little play and cuddle with him, and as he was crawling over me I noticed his front, right foot was red on one of the fingers. It looked like the fur was gone and it was red, I tried getting a good look and a picture but he was very fidgety so I couldn't tell if it was bleeding.

It was just on one of the fingers, looked like there was possibly some blood under the nail but don't hold me to that coz he wasn't in the mood to sit still. I hve thought his nails have been getting quite long, maybe this could be it? As I say I haven't seen it clear enough to know but from what I saw it looks like one finger has hair missing and is red. What should I do?

If it gets worse I shall take him to the vets but it the mean time what can I do to make sure it stays clean, just incase there is something wrong? And what are some good tips on getting their nails shorter? I've heard the vets can do it but are there home remedies?

Thanks a lot in advance (:

I dont know what it is but if you get a clear jar or carry case you can put him in and get a better look?

Short nails, i mean you can put a big rock in there with him to climb on xxx

It sounds like he has pulled a nail which is easily done. Sometimes the bruised nail will fall off but you need to watch the toe does not swell a lot or go black or get infected looking. If so see a vet. The best method I have found of clipping nails is to get a sieve and put hammy in it. Place a cup over hammy in sieve then the nails will drop though the wire of the sieve and you can clip them with baby nail clippers or small nail scissors. If you are able to scruff him firmly then you can cut the nails with small scissors.

I got him out again to look over it and it seem to be fine now, which is strange! I think it may have been a small amount of blood or redness from getting his nail caught, I'm going to try the rock method and see if it files them down at all!

If not I'll take him to the vets to get them trimmed, I don't think I could trust myself to cut them myself but the sieve idea is good, I will start doing that when I'm more confident!

I'll keep an eye on the foot for now and see if it gets better or worse!

Thanks guys (:

He`s possibly jammed or caught his toe in something. Check any wooden bendy log bridges if you have any as these can be culprits for catching long claws. If he has pulled a claw or caught a toe, it may just be swollen due to being bruised up/bruised blood and should heal. But as soufflé said, keep a check on it just to be sure. x
