Default Good food for diabetic hamsters

Hi I have 2 hamsters and there both dwarfs and I currently feed them kaytee lab blocks and Higgins. I am trying to find another food to mix it in with that is in the US. I heard that national geographic hamster and gerbel entree was good but I don't know? Any suggestions?

The only food suitable for diabetes prone hamsters (Chinese, Campbells and Russian Hybrids) is Burgess Dwarf, which would need to be ordered in from the UK. It is a very good quality food though and certainly worth the money.

I hope this answers your question .

Higgins+ a lab block would be suitable for a Syrian or possibly a robo, but I personally think it has way too much dried fruit and sugar in it to be suitable for a diabetes prone species. Kaytee isn't a very good brand in all honesty as it has little nutritional value, unnecessary chemicals, and is packed full of dyes so I would avoid it if at all possible. A better protein block would be something like mazuri or Harlan Teklad.

Like Chesca said, Burgess dwarf is really the superior mix as it has high protein, good variety, and is diabetes friendly! Not sure where you're located, but it's a UK based food so it's easier to get if you're in the UK. It can however, be shipped to the US and similar countries from viovet. Sometimes it's also available on websites like Amazon or eBay Best wishes, if you have any other questions, please ask!

How did you establish that your hamsters are diabetic? I would recommend making sure that you have tested them and seen a vet before adjusting diet or adding in remedies for diabetes, rather than basing any decisions on symptoms alone.

I think she possibly just means diabetes prone hamsters.

I hope your hamsters enjoy their new food .

Unfortunately Burgess switched to a pellet mix that isn’t really suitable for any species. The best mix for diabetic hamsters is the Rodipet hybrid dwarf mix but that’s even more difficult to get in the US. You could try contacting Rodipet about making an order though.
