Exclamation Emergency help. My hamster had a fall.

So about, 20-30 minutes ago, my hamster Sander had a fall. She fell from the bed a foot or two from the floor; she has fallen from this height before.

As soon as it happened I picked her up and there didn't seem to be any noticeable damage. Sander is one of those hamsters that never sits still in your hand, she is always on the move and running over my arms and hands and once I picked her up, she went right on running over my hands.

But then when my boyfriend came in, he picked her up to have a cuddle and she just went completely still in his hands. She seemed to go in some sort of strange trance for about 10-15 minutes where she was completely still and staring. We petted her and put her down to see if she would move and spoke to her but she just wouldn't seem to come out of her trance.

So we put her back in Sander cage to see if she would move about but she continued to sit stock still and after a while, she started to move her head and seem to look at us, respond slightly to things but she seemed very...dazed.

Then we moved her from her top compartment to the bottom part of the cage in case she needed to drink or anything. Which is when she started to move around again but she was moving extremely slowly - she moved to one of her tubes and started to climb up it but it took her at least five minutes to move up through the tube and seemed almost like she was struggling to pull herself up.

She appeared to be moving normally and doesn't seem like she has a spinal injury - there doesn't seem like there's any dragging in her movement. She just seemed quite dazed and slow after the trance but like I said, was running about completely fine until my boyfriend came in the room.

We were worried and thought maybe she might just be really tired so we moved her back into the section of her cage that has her bed (we were scared she wouldn't be able to get there herself if she wanted a sleep) and she went straight into her little house and is now curled up in there.

But we're just really worried something has happened due to the fall that has caused her trance-like state and slow moving.
Does anyone have any suggestions or has this happened to anyone's hamster before after a fall? Should we take her to a vet?

She may still be in shock from the fall, these things to happen though...as everyone here knows, hamsters can be little mischief makers!

Definitely keep an eye on her and see how she is after a rest - make sure she does have access to water/food and if she has a wheel, maybe take it out so if she does have any damage, it won't be worsened. If she doesn't show signs of improvement then the vets may be your best option to check over if she has anything broken but in all honesty, you are her best bet as you know her behaviour.

Don't worry too much, keep her in a calm place too so she gets rest, good luck!

Thank you so much for the quick reply. I always get myself overly worked up about stuff like this.

She heard me moving about just now and popped her out of her house. I said hello and and she came over to the bars to see me and then went down her tube, had a long drink and wandered around a bit. She was still moving a little slowly but seems more aware and managed her tubes a little faster. And now she's gone away back to her bed. :3

I'd agree with synyx that she has had a bit of a fright after the fall and is hesitant in case it happens again. It was not a big fall and they are quite resilient usually. I'd keep her quiet and maybe offer a tasty treat to distract her and monitor how she does. Any sign of anything amiss and you can see the vet in the morning but hopefully she will be back to normal by then

Hope your hammy is none the worse for her tumble, but I wouldn`t allow her to play on a bed because they tend to run off the end. They don`t know they are high up. A fall like this could well cause a thump to the brain, so her slowness may have been due to a slight feeling of being concussed or she felt some pain from the initial fall. But cage rest and monitoring her now will be the best medicine. x
