Do hamsters need dust baths?
I hoenstly hadn't thought much about sand/dust baths for hamsters. But when Jasper got his litter tray, I noticed he liked rolling around in it, kind of like I have seen chinchillas do in sandbaths.
So can anyone tell me a bit more about them? Would it be worthwhile getting one? And what kind of sand can I use?

Re: Do hamsters need dust baths?
Is Jasper a dwarf? All my dwarfies LOVE sandbaths - they have them all the time. To me, a sandbath is almost as essential to them as a wheel.
The important thing is to make sure you use chinchilla sand, not chinchilla dust - the dust causes respiratory problems in hamsters. I use Charlie Chinchilla sand but I'm sure there are other brands out there too.

Re: Do hamsters need dust baths?
Most pet shops stock Charlie Chinchilla sand, i think even P@H stock it I can't say whether Syrians need sand baths but mine don't get them, only the dwarfies have them. If Jasper likes it then give it a go

Re: Do hamsters need dust baths?
Some of my Syrians aren't interested in sand baths, but I find some (especially the babies) absolutely love them, and it brings the coats up nice on the satins.
U buy the sand pre-packed at £1 for a kilo I think.

My robos get greasy fur and they love rolling around in a sandbath to combat this.
I gave my Syrian one but he's just not interested.

Re: Do hamsters need dust baths?
In general I would say most Syrians aren't fussed by sand baths - the girls more than boys I have found like it as a potty, but the dwarf hamster species on the other hand love sand for potty and bathing - we use Charlie Chinchilla - it comes in plastic bottle a bit like a 2 pint milk jug.
Just always remember sand not dust if you get a different brand
