Unhappy Conjunctivitis?!

Hey guys
My little Pumpkin is in the wars tonight, first her cut nose, now this...
Is it possible for hamsters to get conjunctivitis?
As I was coming in my room to get ready for bed Pumpkin came out of her house and her eyes were squinted. I just assumed she was sleepy but when she fully came out, one eye was wide open but one still shut. I got her out to have a look and it looked quite tacky, like it was stuck together and a bit crusty just like us humans when we get conjunctivitis.
She managed to open it eventually.

Is this conjunctivitis or something else?
Is there a way to treat it or is it a case of letting time do the healing?

Since Pumpkin cut her nose it may be annoying her to touch the area and she's not cleaning her eye on that side as well as she should. But hamsters can get gummy eyes just like humans. She should clean it herself. As with anything that isn't quite right with our hamsters, keep an eye on her for both the cut and her eye so that if any inflammatin crops up she can be seen by the vet. I think she'll be fine though.

Yes, it's possible for them to get eye infections, and they should generally be treated with specific antibiotic eye drops (something like a drop twice a day for x number of days). It can turn into a chronic condition if left untreated or partially treated. I'd check with your local vet, and they should see based on symptoms what it could be. If there's discharge and redness, it's most likely an infection.

Gummy eyes are usually a sign of the hamster feeling unwell or just sleeping more. But you might also want to check the teeth because tooth issues can also cause eye problems like abscesses. If she`s been bar chewing, this could be the cause.

In the meantime, you can gently wipe over her eyes with a wetted cotton pad/ball and warm water. This will help any crusty stuff to be cleaned away.

Hi Scrubby,

My Herbie is currently being treated for this. After 3 days of treatment his eye was vastly improved he's on his last day today & it looks normal now. I was given Fucithalmic Eye drops to treat him with.

Hope he gets better soon
xx

I think it was just a one off thing. Maybe she had something in her eye as she was fine today. She's been cleaning her cut a lot but i'll keep an eye on her eye still and her cut.
Thanks for the advice.
