Default Do these glands look normal?

Hi, I've posted on another board about my hammy as he's extremely nervous and I've noticed he doesn't do much in his cage, other than hide. He also approaches everything as if he hasn't seen it before and jumps back all the time.

I think he is healthy, there's certainly nothing obvious to me but I just wanted to ask if the glands on his back look normal to you? I've had a few hamsters and never noticed the glands before...yet his always looks dark/wet. Someone did point out on the other board that maybe he's losing his own scent and therefore is constantly cleaning? Hope the photo is good enough..couldn't keep him still!

Looks normal from that photo. Males have bigger glands which look greasier more often I think. Is he a new one? Could be that he's feeling a little on edge and scenting everything in his cage

Have you owned female hammies before? If so, you probably wouldn't of noticed scent glands
His look fine to me, because his fur is so light they look more prominent, but they seem normal to me. If you notice some kind of tumor then I would worry about it, or any puss/swelling then he may have an infection, but really...don't worry!

Looks normal to me. He is properly scenting everything in his cage. Try not to clean his cage out as often. Also keep some of his old bedding to put back into his cage after you cleaned it out, so he still has bedding with his scent on.

completely normal me thinks hes probably just trying to scent, so like the others said, leave a bit of old bedding in when you clean out x

Yay thank you everyone. I have been cleaning his bed out every day as he wees and poos in there constantly - more so than the rest of his cage. Maybe that's not helping with his nerves!

That will definitely make him more nervous. I wouldn't worry about him pooing in his nest because they eat that anyway... peeing however should be done in a sand bath. It's unusual for a ham to pee in its nest, though it will sometimes do that if scared to warn off threats. Try as best you can to get him to go potty elsewhere, and if you have to clean out his nest often try and retain as much of the bedding as possible to go back.

I've never tried it but doesn't putting a bit of the wet bedding in the corner you want him to use sometimes effective?

I've never had a sand bath for a hamster before, I'll get hold of one and see if that helps him. He really is the neatest hamster ever, doesn't seem to touch anything other that his food bowl! In the meantime I'll try the piece of bedding in a corner, it's all worth a go. Thank you.
