Robbi my dwarf has blood on her bottom.
Took her to the vets and they gave her a good look over, the vet seemed to think that its not coming from inside.
Its possible that she has hurt herself as her nails were a bit long, so they've been cut.
I did notice blood in her carrier after she had a poo, but there was noting on it, and she was grooming like crazy.
She is eating and drinking as normal, and doing normal hamster stuff.
Im rubbing ointment into her butt twice a day.
Any ideas?

Re: Robbi my dwarf has blood on her bottom.
Hi Kimlck. Blood from or suspected from the rear end openings, has to be considered serious, although it depends whether the blood is actually coming from there. It takes a little detective work and once she has `gone` to the toilet a few times, you should watch her when she comes out of her nest because this is when they usually have a pee. My robo does right away when he comes out after sleeping and I use white toilet paper strips to mop up any little puddles he leaves on his shelf. This allows me to check for colour or any abnormal redness.
Does she `go` on a solid shelf or just pee in the substrate? Checking her pee just as she does it is crucial. If no signs of blood are there, then it could be that she`s bled from somewhere else. x

Re: Robbi my dwarf has blood on her bottom.
Back to the vet tonight, she has baytril to take for 7 days.
Have only seen blood on her and 2 very small spots in her nest this am.
After a poo last night she did wee i think , i wiped it up and there was blood, tho not as much as thursday night.
Stange as i wouldve expected to find more in her cage.
Cleaned both her nests last night and found nothing...

If you saw only small amount fresh blood with poo then you won't be able to see any sign of blood with dried poo as it would've dried fast ?!
I really hope your little hamster will get better soon.
Good luck

Re: Robbi my dwarf has blood on her bottom.
I rolled the fresh poo in my fingers and there was nothing, wiped the wee with white paper, bloody wee.
Strange that I'm not seeing more or finding more esp in her cage.

Re: Robbi my dwarf has blood on her bottom.
The fact that the blood is appearing Kim is not right anyway so your taking the right approach here, although it depends whether the blood is in her urine (coming from her bladder) or her womb. If it`s the womb, it could be a sign that all is not well in her female organs.
If she doesn`t already get apple, feed her a little piece each day as apple contains ascorbic acid (vitamin C) which helps to acidify urine if her urine is too alkaline or she may have calcified stones in her wee bladder.
Female hamsters are usually more prone to these types of infections just because they are female. I lost my Chinese hamster to passing blood and her`s began by just tiny little spots of blood. She ended up not being able to pee.
Really hope the Baytril works. If it clears up the signs, keep her on it because if it is a bacterial infection, antibiotics are usually best given longer than seven days but you can ask your vet for more baytril if you feel it would be beneficial. x

Re: Robbi my dwarf has blood on her bottom.
Well, Robbi has been on baytril since saturday, and so far so good.
She is peeing normal and we havent seen any blood on her or in her cage.
Baytril seems to agree with her, strange yes, or it could be how we give it to her....
On 2 big fat crickets.....

LOL. Whatever works That was really inventive on your part. Whenever a vet prescribes antibiotics it is really important that the hammy get it. So it's great that you got her to take her meds...even on 2 big fat crickets .
