Default Hamster Cannibalism

My roommate has two Syrian hamsters, one of which passed away sometime last week. After we found the hamster carcass, it has quite a bit of skull missing(presumably eaten by the remaining hamster). I'm wondering if the other hamster can get sick after consuming the rotting hamster flesh.

Well this is a really horrible situation that should never have happened.
For a start two syrians should not have been together EVER. They are naturally solitary and will fight if kept together.
It is most likely that a fight led to one killing the other.
Hamsters will eat animal flesh though they are primarily vegetarian so yes it would not be abnormal for one to consume a dead hamster particularly if it was lacking in food otherwise.
How on earth the fact one was dead and was not noticed till a week later when the flesh was rotting is beyond my comprehension. Hamsters need daily checking, feeding and fresh water. How was this not noticed? If it was sick it may have suffered and been in need of vet care.
The remaining hamster could become ill from eating the dead flesh especially if the other poor hamster was indeed sick. I would suggest a vet visit and a good check over to ensure everything is in order with that hamster.
Set up a routine now of good care and daily checks for this little one so it can enjoy the rest of it's life being attended to as it should.
Rest in Peace little lost one x

Your room mate clearly knows nothing about pet ownership and needs to learn the basics Syrian hamster should never be housed together as they will fight to the death, a pet should be checked up on every night to made sure it has sufficient food and water and if you smell a stale smell coming from the cage your being far too lax on cage cleaning duties. I feel sorry for this poor creatue that is obviously been tortured

Oh no, what a nightmare. As the other member`s have said, Syrians are solitary hamsters and should never be housed together unless it`s a male and a female for breeding purposes by a breeder. Did your room mate buy the hamsters recently from a shop or what? Shame he/she didn`t find this forum when they originally got the Syrians or this may have been prevented.

The remaining Syrian should be fine, but I strongly suggest your room mate joins, or at least reads some of the sections on here to find out more about Syrian hamsters and the best way to house and keep them.

Okay so everyone above has pointed out the obvious. Your roommate should not have gotten them without researching the animal first and probably never should have gotten them if she only planned on looking at them once a week. Seriously people comon.

Could be. And somehow the username makes me think it's part of a joke. It's based on the phrase 'why so serious'. But if it is true. Why did they let it happen?!
