Question Wet Tail Medication

I am a proud new owner of two Winter Whites But I am terrified of my hamsters getting sick. Wet tail, mainly. My budget is quite low, so I don't know if I could pay for a vet visit. Are there any medications I could get at pet stores, etc, that could help my Hammies if they got wet tail? I realize that I do have a responsibility to take my Hammies to the vet if its serious

Thanks for replies!

Yeah, I read somewhere that they don't actually cure the disease itself, but helps with the diarrhea :/

Fingers crossed your hammies won't get wet tail !!! If any hamster get wet tail only way to cure them is vet prescribed antibiotic called baytril and additional probiotic medications. I don't believe you can buy baytril from pet shop or online. Since you know you've got low budget maybe you could start calling around vets in your area and compare the prices and start saving little towards "vet care budget" I think there is tread about vet care cost.
Best of luck

You know, I've never had any of my Syrian hamsters develop wet tail and I've been keeping them for rather a long time. Also I know a fair few people who keep Syrian hamsters and they have never experienced wet tail either. So I'd say that from my own experience the incidence of wet tail is greatly exaggerated.

Wet tail flares up in a certain area due to breeders who have an outbreak and don't destroy all stock which have been in contact with it. Pet shops also get wet tail reported and keep on selling hamsters from the same cage as the infected hamster. Basically, when they sell on an unhealthy hamster they are getting their vet bills paid for them by the new owner.

My verdict on affording vet fees is rather harsh: Anyone who can't afford vet fees shouldn't own an animal in the first place! But personally I would prefer to starve to death rather than see any of my animals suffer because I can't afford to take them to the vet.

Hi Anthorn if you never came across wet tail situation count yourself lucky !!! I can't say same about me. My Syrian hamster had wet tail and in fact I know few people from hamster central had same terrible ordeal. Some of the hamsters survived and some did not
Wet tail virus is actually dormant virus within hamster and just happen to surface when their immune system is down. Usually young one and due to stress, change of diet etc.
oh again I repeat myself here if your hamster has wet tail there is nothing you can do but go the the vet ASAP. And in the UK vet fees are not that much ranging from £9-£20 depending of the area you live.
