Pyometra question
I don't know if this is a stupid question or not.. but.. can you have your hamster spayed as a youngster as a prevention to pyometra or would a vet only carry out the operation as a cure if the hamster actually developed the condition?
Thanks

Re: Pyometra question
A vet would not do a spay as a preventative measure because it is very risky to both operate and give an anaesthetic to such a small animal. Few have experience with spaying such small animals too and the chances of damaging something else looking for the uterus are high (when spaying for a pyo it would be large and easy to find) It isn't like dogs and cats either who roam and could get pregnant so not really needed as a routine procedure.
