Default Re: Vet Care - how much should I budget?

Hmm, as with any pet the costs can vary hugely from animal to animal. Our four hams all came from a well-known UK pet store and three of them are, touch wood, fine. The fourth, a little black chap, didn't seem to put on weight like the others and I could only see huge lower teeth at the bottom of his jaw. He also seemed desperate to drink but only got the water down him. An initial visit to the vet was frightening; he has a deformed jaw and had 1cm of tooth removed from the bottom; the top teeth appeared to be non-existent. The check-up a week later required anaesthetic and further clipping; the top teeth actually grow straight back into his upper palate. The vet has tried to clip them back, but was limited with the time that he was under anaesthetic ... £60 and counting ... He'll need monthly trims, if he survives long term - the prognosis isn't encouraging, tbh.

Default Cost of taking your hamster to a vet

Hey,

I just wanted to let people whose hamsters get sick what my experience has been with taking them to a vet. Anyways

A check up and medication for two weeks costs me $65 Cdn
A check up and nail trimming costs me $35 Cdn

I have taken my hamsters to the vet for infections where the intestines were coming out, or an infection where my hamster was bleeding everywhere in the cage. The vet said it was a large amount of blood.

My hamsters are Dwarf Hamsters (Pure bread Cambell Hamsters; Blue Mottled, Argente Platinum and Opal. My blue mottled recently died.)

As for size my Argente Platinum - Goldie is 56g
As for size of my Opal - Explorer she was 55g but now shes probably 75g
As for size of my Blue Mottled - Patches she was 40g (she was tiny)

My two hamsters which were 3, live in 4 houses and ill buy more later when I like more. They used to fight but they also sleep together when cold and take care of each other when one is sick or injured.

Mod note : Please can you stick to the protocol in future Glenn

The Blue Cross also do a system for those on benefits. They have travelling vans that park up in certain areas every week to give clinics, as well as their hospitals.

I hope it's ok to put their website in showing their hospital locations etc:
