Re: Lots of blood on karlie bogie wonderland wheel!!
I just managed to pick him up and there is not a scratch on him, nothing at all! I might put the wheel back in tonight and take out the berries to see what happens...

Re: Lots of blood on karlie bogie wonderland wheel!!
well I have sanded it down, so if it was a splinter, then it should be ok! so I will (shyly) leave the wheel in there tonight, and see what has happened when I wake up I guess!

Re: Lots of blood on karlie bogie wonderland wheel!!
I admit that I am overly paranoid about introducing them to chemicals that they would normally never find in the wild... and Jesselle has nailed my concern regarding hamsters nom-noming on a wheel coated in Plastikote. Without having done a lick of research on this product (shame on me - I agree!) I would imagine that it has one or more chemicals that has carcinogenic properties.
If it is rodent safe and approved by long term members here, then go for it. From my experience, my hamsters chew on just about everything I do not want them to chew on: Fingers, tubing, each other, the sealant in the joints in their aquariums, fingers, the joints in their wheel, the base of their wheel, fingers some more, the glass lips on the baby food jars that I used for their potty, etc., etc.

Well I will do a lot of research into the paint tomorrow I'm in bed now and I can hear him running around on his wheel, so I hope he will be ok :/

I know Plastikote is regarded as safe for small childrens belongings - and we can rely on some small kids to chew their stuff, so its on those grounds that I trust it but extra research can't hurt

Jasminerosee, I hope all is well with your little hamster and it was just that he was trying to make his own berry smoothie!
csockman, I agree with you when it comes to plasticote, it's not something I would like to use, even if it's non-toxic i don't like the idea of them chewing something like that.

Re: Lots of blood on karlie bogie wonderland wheel!!
UPDATE!
I kept the wheel in overnight without any pink food in and there are no marks today on his wheel. I don't know of it was the berries or a splinter, but all seems well today!

Re: Lots of blood on karlie bogie wonderland wheel!!
Yay! That is awesome, I bet/hope that this was just a one off for one of those reasons. I also wonder if he somehow got one of his nails caught in a seam and he tore it to the quick. These injuries can bleed hard, but usually coagulate fast enough on their own.
If this was caused by a UTI or worse, an internal tumor that is affecting his urinary tract, I would imagine that you would have seen blood in his bedding (if you have white bedding). If you don't have white paper based bedding, I would make a suggestion that you buy some and watch his urinary habits for the next week to see if his pee does in fact contain blood in it.
@ _nod - Thanks for the vote of confidence! I was hoping I wasn't the only tin-foil hat wearing person on this forum
