Male Syrian penile discharge?
Hey folks!
Just a quicky for anyone who may be more on the ball (harhar) with male Syrians than me, since Timi's my first Syrian.
He's about 8-9 months old now so I can safely say that's he's fully grown, testicles and all! But I was just playing with him and I noticed that he left something white in his wake on my trousers as he walked. It looked like a blob of rheum (That white stuff you get in your eyes over time/after sleeping) and my first thought was 'he's got an infection'.
So I turned him over to have a looked and the opening for his penis has a coating of this white stuff, it's not particularly messy and it doesn't looked enflamed at all, but I'm a little concerned since I've never seen this before.
The only thing I could find after a google search was that it's either normal (following an ejaculation... so hamster sperm) or that it's cancer. ^^;
Unfortunatly Timi's not very receptive to being turned on his back or made or stand so I can see his belly so I can't share any pictures, but does anyone know what this is? Is it normal or should I invest in a vet visit?

LOL! Even if I can't help you with a definite answer, I've got to say that your post made me giggle!
My best guess after many years shared with males of many different species? He's in his prime and he's male and he's probably got hormones raging through his body! These things happen and unless it happens all the time or has a smell I wouldn't worry about it

Re: Male Syrian penile discharge?
It sounds like semen. Male mice can get what are called penile plugs, where this secretion can harden and blocks the end of the penis and usually needs (gently!) pulling off to allow urination. If Timi`s is just liquid, chances are he`s just aroused. But he would clean the area himself anyway. But keep an eye on it and make sure he`s peeing okay and check to make sure it doesn`t turn hard. Urine itself can be too alkaline and cause crystals to form in the bladder itself, so acidifying the urine by feeding a small piece of fresh apple a few times a week or any fruit containing vitamin C would help. Not citrus though.

Re: Male Syrian penile discharge?
I'd be inclined to say it was plug. They do happen occassionally but usually they clean themselves.
Try wrap him in a blanket to turn him over and chek he isnt inflamed around the area.
A warmed wet cotton bud around the opening can clean it if he hasn't managed and allow you to look. With older hams they sometimes need "popped" to clean the plugs out but he is young o hopefully you just had him out before he had finished hi cleaning

Re: Male Syrian penile discharge?
In my experience males are normally pretty clean in that department unless there is something amiss. There shouldn't be any discharge or white stuff present. I'd try gentle bathing but if it keeps coming back or looks very red or if he strains to wee then there could be an infection and it is important to get this seen to as it can cause a blockage or a penile prolapse.
Unless you have a female hamster he can smell he is unlike to get aroused!

Re: Male Syrian penile discharge?
That`s very true souffle. I`ve had male mice with penile prolapse and it can be caused by infection or straining to pee.

Re: Male Syrian penile discharge?
Alas, there are no female Hams anywhere near him, if there were I'd probably be a bit more relaxed xD
I probably did have him out before he'd finished cleaning (He's so adorable when he's grooming so I tend to watch him for a bit, talk at him before showing him my hand and stroking him, more often than not that's enough of a distraction to him so he stops grooming xD) but having said that, I will keep an eye on it to make sure it doesn't get blocked, inflamed or that he's not struggling in the urinating department.
Thank you for the feedback folks! Feel much less worried now. ^^
