Default sand bath NOT a hit

Felix tried his sandbath but didnt like it. It was quite small just like a hamster potty. He turned round a few times had a wee poke at it then did the toilet and was disinterested after that. I think when i next clean his cage i will try it in his playbox. I use a big plastic tub for him to play in and put tumble fresh in bottom but i thought if i put put sand in for him to dig it. Do u think this might work as his nails are getting very long and i dont want to take him to vet in case they try to sedate him.

My syrian loves hers. I use glass jar like this as sand bath. You can get them from tesco.

Hello, I just bought mine some sand today; haven't tried it yet (just got these hamsters). I know that when I had gerbils, most of them really enjoyed it for the first few minutes at least. I spread about a quarter inch of sand on a small dinner saucer and placed it in their tank. Their coats instantly looked better after they rolled around in it.

As for help with his nails, I'm not sure the sandbath will help much with that. Perhaps you could create a large play environment with lots of sand and natural woods for him to climb around on to help wear down the nails. And it would also be good enrichment for him. Best of luck!

Darwin (my syrian) only used his sand bath to pee in! He was uninterested in rolling or digging in it at all! I stopped using Chinchilla sand & bought potty litter since it's cheaper. I also bought some Eco Earth Loose Coconut Fiber substrate (looks like dirt) for him to dig in. He will acutally dig in this & he loves digging to find his sunflower seeds. As for long nails, I keep large rocks in his cage for him to walk across to help keep them filed down. I put one under his water bottle so he HAS to go n it each day

Lorrapaw, I'm not sure where you are located, but I bought one at a local PetSmart. I also found it on amazon in the UK too
