Default Baytril, Mastitis + New Pups

Stupid question but my vet couldnt answer 100%. I have two female syrians with mastitis, Bling can probably have Baytril, her pups are about two weeks and are hardier but Bessy's bubs are 2 days old and I dont want to risk making them all sick when they are suckling constantly.

Has anyone used Baytril on a lactating female? Is there anything else that can be used other than Baytril? Im sick of Baytril being the only thing we can use because its so broad spectrum its hardly surprising it rarely works. In larger animals *rabbits through to cattle and alpacas* we would use Synulox or Tylan but never Baytril for Mastitis.

Hi Moosley sorry to her about the new mums having mastitis ouch not nice. Unfortuntly as far as I am aware Baytril is the only thing they can have. The other ones are far too high dosage for small animal they just give baytril and hope for the best. Also I know they can give an anti inflammatory Tochi had one for his teeth notsure what it was called. sorry I can't help more. Never had problems with mastitis.

Just wondered, but how do you know the syrian mum with 2 day old pups has mastitus? Do you handle them when pups are this young? Our mum with pups the same age barely leaves her nest, except to stretch out to get food, so there's no way we would know if she had something like this. Just curious......

I've heard it will harm nursing babies But not how badly or in what way.

My hamster mum wanted handling mid-giving birth, then whenever I went into the room. She only got very quick cuddles for the first few days, as she wouldn't go back to the nest until lifted out I think some Mums are more committed than others, Mollz' Mum!

I have never had a ham with mastitis but it is caused by a bacterial infection of the mammary glands. It can affect one of the teats or all and the become enlarged and hot with a blood stained discharge. The mother looks very unwell.
Enrofloxacin can be given I have read and anti inflammatory drugs too. Also a warm compress can help.
I have read also that the babies are unlikely to survive as suckling is very painful and the babies may be destroyed by her. It is best not to use a hamster with this problem for breeding again.
Two hamsters with this is very unusual. Have you seen a vet with them Moosley? Are you sure the nipples don't just look swollen with nursing? It does not usually show till pups are 7-10days so 2 days would seem a bit soon.

Baytril CAN affect newborn pups but it might be a chance you have to take, I know I would

mmm, sorry forgot who asked now! Mollz Mum i think LOL as i remember Amelie has pups.

Moo is an active girl and she had a wire cage and i always check females when they are nursing by offering the treat high up the bars so they reach up and i can check all teats.

I think Bling is actually ok, i handled her last night and its just very suckled (maybe that one has nicer flavour )

Bessy has a swollen teat but its the milk duct behind it thats swollen, i've seen mastitis so many times in other animals its easier to notice and its why i check. It might not be seen in most syrians but i've seen it a few times and they never seem to get it bad enough to need treatment so chances are it would often go unnoticed as not many people can check the females with young pups.

There is nothing leaking out her teat and while its slightly warm, there wasnt that much heat in it so i dont think its too bad but i cant risk my beautiful girl for her babies so she has had baytril (she says its disgusting!) and also because its a bacterial infection, if the babies do try suckling from that teat then they might get an stomach upset either way.

We'll see how they both do! Thanks for your help!

Just wanted to say that the mastitis has cleared up really quickly and the pups are all fine, starting to get fuzzy! There are two dom spots, 4 pale pink eyeds (cinnies or dove) and 5 darkies (goldens/golden torts etc)
