Tochi teeth looks like I'm back at vets this week
Hi Everyone
Tochi my LH Red eyed Ivory who is 15 months now I looked at him tonight and he had his mouth open and has lost a bottom tooth I have checked the others and it's just that one missing but he is having problems eating now dry food is still not touched. I gave him some baby rice earlier off my finger and he licked it off. Mum tried giving him a bit of cereal just now and he dropped it seems like he didn't know what to do with it. He seems to have lost it about 24 hours ago. He had 2 monkey nuts last night also he chews the bars so could have been either that caused it to come out. What will happen about eating can they manage with 3? Will it grow back? I don't know whether he's not eating cause it's tender not really sure I am worried he will starve or not have enough nutrients from the baby rice. I am thinking also about phoning the vets tommorow aswell.
Any advice much appreciated I am worried about him its never happened before with any of them.

Try feeding him some rice pudding, porridge or baby food so that he has some nutrients and give the vets a call.
Other people will probs give better advice than me though!

The tooth may have broken off near the root but should still regrow. The other tooth needs trimmed off lower so the two are more even so I would take him to the vets. Hamsters use their palate to grind food too so offering smaller stuff is good. You can put regular food in the food processer and whiz it up. Also offer soft food and the fine chopped nuts you get in the supermarket plus maybe omega seed mix which has already had the seeds shelled. scrambled egg, chicken, baby food, porridge etc are good too and you can soak the biscuits from the ham food to soften them. I would say that unless there is an abcess in the tooth it should heal well and start to grow again pretty quickly. If there is an abcess he will need antibiotics. good luck at the vets.

You will probably have to go to the vets to have the upper tooth (opposite to the lost one) trimmed. Hamsters' teeth actually never stop growing and are kept short by nibbling hard food like grains, nuts, etc. and thereby grinding each other.
Keep an eye on the other teeth, too - if he can only eat mashed food, they might grow too long as well.
I would grind Tochi's normal food and mix it with a bit of baby food so that he still gets all the nutriments he needs.
As the others said, the tooth will probably grow again. Fenja once had one of her bottom teeth broken (a part of it was missing) but it grew pretty quickly and she didn't have any problems with it.

Our Anophthalmic White Skippy has no top teeth at all and we get the ground down every 2 weeks. Clipping the teeth makes them split and as your hamster has already lost a tooth maybe you could ask the vet if they could file them with a diamond tipped air grinder. In the meantime give him soft baby rice, egg and even boiled vegetables wizzed in a blender. Let us know how you and the little soul get on.

Hi Thanks all
I looked again at his teeth just incase he still has some of the tooth left and he has a little bit I think its hurting him and he feels miserable poor little boy. I mashed up a banana and added a little bit of milk added to it he really enjoyed it. I am taking him to the vets later this afternoon. Hopefully they will be able to file the others down to align them. Thank you very much for all the soft foods I will definatly try him I am willing to do anything for him. I'll let you know how I we get on.

Hi All
Have just got back from the vets. We saw the vet that knows about hamsters. He was gentle with him and had a look at his teeth he said that the broken one had a sharp point on it so he said he would file it down and give him an anti inflammatory injection for the pain, the tooth will grow back. Also need to keep an eye on the top tooth because it could grow longer and may need clipping. We will take him back if no improvment with eating etc. I will give him baby rice/mash banana again tonight. Poor little man he has gone back to bed now. Am glad he is on the mend though.

Thats good news Sarah and hopefully he will feel a bit more comfy now and start eating again. Don't give too much banana as it could upset his tummy. I would try some whizzed veg now and soak some hammy biscuits or kitten biscuits. Hope he has a speedy recovery.

This is great news Sarah, you should see a huge improovement in him soon, anti inflamatories are fabulous at perking the little ones up when they need it most because it gives them a "boost" I'm glad he's on the mend, that's faberoony

Hi Souffle
Thanks for that will do. Tochi is so docile has never bitten, didn't have to tame him when I got him he was like ok this is what we do fair enough. He's very layed back and the vet just looked at his teeth no problem.
Hi Naomi Thank you very much, anti inflammatoreis I agree are good for perking them up when they need it.
Hopefully he won't need to go back to the vets and will be back to his old self again asap.
Thank again
Sarah x
