Went to the vet with cricket and he under went a skin scraping and had a patch of fur plucked out. I should have some of the results tomorrow but the vets seems to think it may be ring worm but he is getting tested for all types of mite etc. So hopefully we can get him the right treatment

Hi just read this thread and the one thing that struck me is you use bleach to clean cages, this product is too strong, please only use pet safe disinfectant and hot water, this might not be the cause of hammies problem but it certainly cant help, hope you find a cure and hammies are ok x

I only use 1 part bleach 15 parts water then cages are soaked then rinsed again so no bleach is left any where. I'm not sure if pet disinfectant would kill off any remaining mite lavae but I read that the bleach would kill off everything but fingers crossed we will have the answers to our problem very soon

Thanks for the link I think your right with them pictures cricket is no way near that stage and the vet only found a few scabs white scabs today five weeks after taking him in

Jamos, when I first noticed something was amiss with my ham, I caught him repeatedly scratching a spot behind his ear. Upon further inspection there was no fur loss or scabs at the site, but I did notice what appeared to be wee spots of dandruff on the skin (this was the beginning of the fungal infection and not dandruff). As it progressed the fur loss set in as well as the scabs. As my site implies it took forever to get a diagnosis and treatment because of false negatives on initial tests. I think your vet has things in order here so far. Please keep us posted.

Well after all the test I put cricket through it all came down to the room deoderiser after this was removed the problems stopped. I was upset that I didn't spot this sooner but if you check these things out on the net there no good for humans either. Thanks everyone for your help. Aaron

Jamos, when you go to the vet please let us know what the result is. This is a bit bizarre and I know I'd like to know what is doing this to your hammies. Good Luck at the vets.

Hi ithink you might have missed my last post. I found it was the room air refreshner that was making his skin bad and by removing it he is now on the mend
