Yes, I agree Souffle. The animal sanctuary I work at has a huge rat problem because it's based on a field and they are opportunists. We have several feral roaming cats, and they don't seem to bother with them because we feed them real food. Remember that rats are large, and can cause quite a bit of damage to the wrong cat. And not all cats are natural born hunters, my cat hunts the rubber bands which the postman drops while hes doing his round.

I agree with Souffle and lucyeleanor. We've had cats for the past 17 years and the biggest thing any of them have ever brought back was a bird and that was only because it was injured and because they have proper food, they've generally just caught stuff and brought it back live. It's really more play to them I think.
Also, with rats being so big, they can inflict some nasty injuries if cornered which is another reason why cats don't really bother with them. you could end up with some pretty serious vet bills if anything happens and obviously, if people live in adjoining properties, there's no guarantee that they won't be putting rat poison down so even if you're not doing it, there is still a chance that if your cat does catch one, it may still end up being poisoned

I love this lucyeleanor - my cat Billy does this too . However, he also eats a very good diet of Royal Canin and catches rats. He is the only cat I have ever had over the years who catches rats, normally we find they just catch the odd bird or teeny shrew. Billy catches big brown rats, mice, birds & anything else he can find. He eats most of it too. He is a nightmare & has to be wormed once a month because of it. Inside the house he is the lovliest, kindest, most people-loving cat ever but outside he is a major killing machine. Needless to say, our cats are not allowed in the same room as our hammies or guineas!

Yuel0022 - I agree with everybody else here, please don't get any more pets where you are. A cat that catches rats is very unusual (in all my years I have only had one!) & you are likely to have poison down from neighbours if there are rats around so that could make a cat very ill.

Please don't get guineas or any more hamsters while you are in this difficult situation. Guineas would be just as likely to be harmed by rats as hamsters. Look forward to the day you have moved house & can offer a really great home to pets while being sure there are no rats etc around.

I am sorry to hear about all the sad times you have been having with your hamsters.

Best wishes for the future, shiny

Hi guys!

About rats, I'm really sorry but I think I am referring to house mice, the ones that cats can handle. I mistakenly called them rats, and I'm confused because I really thought rats and mice were the same Thanks for informing me and sorry for the misinterpretation.

Also, thank you very much for the sympathy. I'm thinking of having the cage stored away for a while. I don't know but it's kinda depressing seeing the cage without the hamsters.
