Default Sand baths?

I’m wondering if there is any point in a sand bath for a Syrian hamster. Does is help with their fur or do they just have fun with it? And what is the best sand to use? I know never to use any kind of dust.

Also one of my hamsters is a long-haired, not sure if that matters.

Thanks!!

Hi there!
I have a Syrian hamster (short haired) and he absolutely loves to roll and dig in it. It is used to help your hamsters coat and skin nice, healthy and clean. I also think it is better for cleaning purposes because they tend to wee or poo in the sand so you just siv it out when you need to. The safest sand to use is suitable for chinchillas, hamsters, gerbils and degus. I bought it from a paws for thought and it comes in a blue milk carton type thing and says supreme science bathing sand. If you were still interested I would definitely recommend looking on the internet for it.
Hope this was useful!

I don't know about long haired hamsters, but Willow loves her sand, & digging in it helps keep her claws down.

I've got commercial chin sand at the moment, but you can also get childrens play sand & bake it in the oven to sterilise (let it cool, of course before using !). The chin sand is easier to store than a bag of play sand, but costs more.

Yeah I agree but if you can reuse what you have then you won't have to buy another carton for ages

Make sure its either chinchilla sand or childrens play sand left to dry (or heated in the oven to dry it).

Syrians don't need sand but some like it. Our Scamp doesn't get it and doesn't want it, our Fwirl likes her sand bath and loves to play in there.

My Syrian loves hers, it made a huge difference to her coat once we gave it to her.

All depends on the hamster

My Syrian spends most of her time in the sand bath, her coat is substantially smoother and feels sooooo soft to the touch and she just enjoys a good dig! and I also noticed the sand digging helps trim her nails so I guess like SS said it depends on the hamster

my two Syrians love digging in it, as well as using it as a toilet. never seen them roll around in it like my sister's Winter White does though.
