Our hamster Bertie who is approaching 22months old has suddenly started making very strange noises when asleep. I noticed it a few months ago when he would sort of squeek but now he is really loud and I dont know if he is dreaming or if he is in pain. He seems ok healthwise and still likes to play in every night and is eating well. Also when he is in his cage he has started making a snorting noise as he searches for food. Is this just a sign of old age? I am starting to worry about him a lot more these days as I know hamsters dont live much longer than 2 years unless you are very lucky.
They can be vocal during their dreams and make snuffling sounds when searching for food.
Does his breathing sound raspy otherwise?
If it is then he could have a chest infection, if your worried it could be then its worth getting him checked out. But if not I expect its just usual vocalisation

My syrian, Boris, makes all sorts of squeaking noises while he sleeps, and he's coming up for two years old now. He has been doing it for 6 months now. He had two courses of antibiotics, but it made no difference, so I'm sure it isn't an infection in his case.
Thanks everyone. He is up and about tonight and seems very spritely so I think ke must just be vocalising. I will keep an eye on him and if concerned will take him to see the vet. He certainly isnt wheezy so dont think it is a chest problem.
