Default Dwarf hamster cheek inflammation - advice needed!

I have a dwarf hamster called Max who is a little bit over a year old. I think he must have injured his cheek pouch in some way and now it is inflamed and filled with pus. Brought him to the vet last Wednesday and they put him on some Baytril for about a week because they were slightly reluctant to drain the fluid out straight away.

His Baytril bottle reads 5 mg in 0.1 ml... not sure how strong this concentration is but his dosage is two drops per day. It's his fourth dosage today and so far there hasn't been any improvement with his swelling and I don't know what to do How long does it usually take for Baytril to take effect? Should I be worried that it is not healing in any way?

Would really appreciate some input! I've been worrying so much about little MAx

Poor little Max, I'm not surprised you're worried.
It may take a while for the meds to kick & have a noticeable effect, how long is the course & have you got a follow up appointment with the vet?
I don't think there's much you can do other than keep giving the meds until the course is finished, if it's still no better then he'll definitely have to go back to the vet.
Is he managing to eat & drink OK, if he can't eat his normal food he may be able to eat baby food or hamster food softened in water.

If he has a wound in there it may have abscessed and this is why the vet has prescribed an antibiotic, but they don`t always work. If your concerned that Max isn`t right, I would advise calling the vet and telling them so and maybe get to the next stage of flushing/draining or whatever the vet feels is the better action to take.

If the vet knows there is fluid/puss in there and it hasn`t reacted to the Baytril, they can flush it. Max will feel better for it even though it may mean more invasive action, but what else can you do? The vet will probably know you will want Max seen again after a week anyway.

Diet-wise, always be sure there are no whole oats or anything else that might pierce or jag the pouches. I feel your worry and try not to stress too much (hugs). x Keep us updated?

The swelling does not seem to be going away I have been reading on forums about abscesses and seems like most hamsters just get it drained.. I come from a very small country on Borneo and the vets here all seem pretty reluctant to help Max drain it because they'd have to sedate him and they're worried something might go wrong. But antibiotics does not seem to work on the infection anymore!

My friend recommended another vet to me and I will bring Max tomorrow to see him as he will be on his sixth day of antibiotics already and nothing is healing...

I made a mistake with the dosage of the baytril.. it was actually 0.5 mg in 10 ml. Is this a really low concentration and that's why it's not working on Max? I was wondering whether it's possible to increase the dosage from two drops once a day to giving him two drops twice a day.. would that be safe?

Sometimes, antibiotics can take a wee bit longer to take effect, the vet gave you that dosage for a reason, so don't go upping his dosage without seeing the vet.
I really don't think you should've changed vets, you haven't given the vet you saw a chance, usually, a second lot of antibiotics is needed.

My Campbell's had an abscess/tumour on his back. The vet stuck a needle into test for puss/ it was blood so sadly he was put down, he bit the vet too for jabbing him lol. I was gutted. I was only about 16 so the vet never charged me anything. I hope they can flush the puss out yours
