Thank you for the update - I will discuss this one with my vet and will do some reading.

I think it's really interesting that you pointed out that a varied diet is helpful, because it most certainly is for any animal. Most cases of "ingredient sickness" in dogs for example (to corn, starches, etc) comes from feeding them the same diet day after day. A varied diet allows the immune system to exercise, if you will. A bored immune system can turn on the body, as rising rates of diseases like multiple sclerosis seem to bear out in human beings.

Thank you very much. Sure, please use this information as you'd like--it's here to help.

By the way, my Lucy is now two and a half years old and is still doing great to my continuous amazement. Still on the soup and dog pellet (Hills Prescription Diet K/D) diet, as described. She's got some sort of an abscess between the inside of her right pouch and the outside skin, which did not respond to antibiotics, and we're just seeing how it goes. But she's doing just fine otherwise, full of energy!

Thank you for writing this. I am possibly dealing with a hybrid with kidney issues (tbc) and have found this useful reading.

Hopefully your new dwarfy is okay! I've updated the guide slightly to reflect personal experience, for example adding that fresh veggies when boiled in soup result in spoiling it a lot faster (when it sits out in a dish until the next dose). Nowadays, I just boil grains and tiny bits of pasta and exclude vegetables, and give a fresh refill every 24 hours--sometimes more often. The cooked soup is good for about 3-4 days in a fridge, depending on how good your tupperware is--I got a nice glass container with a good cover seal.

Lucy's been on the soup exclusively since before I posted this guide, and I also still supplement Hills Prescription Diet K/D pellets--one-two a day (they are tiny) and periodically puffed grains. I also add things like timothy hay cubes every once in a while, and walnut bits as treats every couple weeks.

I think it's just Lucy who is so healthy in general, but she's full of energy, and runs around like mad when she's out. She's skinny, but her fur is in a good silky condition. She's been kind of hunched over for a good long time now, but does not seem to be in any sort of discomfort. I think she's mostly blind now, which is causing some changes in her behavior, but other than that and her appearance, she's far more active than my much younger other dwarfies.

He's not new, he's 14 months and I've had him 7 months

I'm hoping it's not going to be this but I am prepared. Glad Lucy is happy and healthy!

Oops, sorry I've replied to your other thread--hopefully it's not permanently impaired kidneys but something a change of diet could help.

Thank you so much for your research on CKD. My daughter's beloved hamster showed signs of this recently. We ruled out diabetes and the vet didn't have many options for us for treatment. I'm so glad I found this site. After just 5 days, Honey (the hamster) is doing so much better. We haven't needed to fill his water bottle for over a week! He's gobbling up the food you recommended. I have two questions though. 1) Our vet thought the K/D pellets would have too much protein for a hamster and he was concerned about us using them. Comments? And, 2) despite eating a lot, Honey is much thinner than he used to be. The vet's office suggested it could be due to less bloating (now that he's not drinking as much water). I'm concerned that the 2 drops of flax seed oil aren't supplying him with enough fat. What do you think?

We seem to be the latest actually needing this thread but when it was posted I said thanks and that it'd be handy if any of us ever needed it... Today I ended up standing in the vets saying I knew where to start changing diet to be kidney friendly. I'm not happy I've had to say that but I definetly really, really appreciate having this resource here today
