Default finger caught in latch

Feeling like a bad parent right now -- we put Angel in her carry case this morning while we moved her cage (2 man job) to the car. Angel discovered that she can push the lid open if she simultaneously pushes around the latch. The first time she did this I didn't believe her mum had shut the lid properly so I put her back in and carried on with the travel prep. I noticed her going frantic in the box, she had failed to open the lid but got her little fingers stuck in the latch as it snapped back shut after she failed to lift the lid.

I managed to release some pressure off the latch ( very tricky as you have to push it to release it and her paw was trapped in it) and she fell back into the floor of the case.

Now she seems ok but her fingers ( the inner 2) are very red. She seems unfazed and if it starts to bother her i will take her to the vet.

My concern is something is damaged in her fingers despite her being seemly ok. Any advice welcome.

Aww, poor little lass! Don't feel bad, it was just an accident

The only thing a vet would be able to do is provide anti inflammatories and pain killers. Possibly antibiotics too because of the potential for infection.

If I were you I would pop her along to the vet if they are still red and/or swollon in a couple of days. If they get worse (certainly if they begin to turn blue), take her straight to the vet. She's unlikely to show any signs of pain etc as they are very careful to hide it, being prey animals.

Hi SS. Thanks for the advice - we'll definitely keep an eye on her over the next couple of days to check if there is swelling or her fingers start to turn blue. Good point about hiding pain - something to remember for the future. Thanks again

No problem Hope she gets better soon, I've trapped my fingers in stuff before - it's damned painful!

Yowch, daft hammy

I think if she's not bothered there is a chance its ok and just a bit bruised. You're keeping an eye on it and thats the best thing you can do really. Sounds like you've done well with her, and I hope her fingers heal up quickly.

Thanks everyone! Whilst we obviously wish she hadn't hurt herself, we're very impressed that she managed to open it! They can be so clever
