Unhappy worried about squeak :(

Hi, im really worried about my squeak he is a dwarf hamster and is around 18 months old (i rescued him). A few days ago, when he got up i noticed that his fur was grey rather than brown. Straight away i thought he's ageing. :/ this morning i noticed that he seems to have no fur left on his belly or chest and a few pieces of poo were stuck to him i removed this as best as i could but it quickly got stuck again. Reminded me exactly the same way how my harry was before he passed away Today he has also been acting really hyper! He literally without exaggerating hasn't slept for 2 minutes all day... he has been constantly eating and running round his cage crazy.... is this something to worry about?? Definitely doesnt seem normal with everything else going on. Everything seems to be becoming reality and im now shaking inside, thinking mine and squeaks time is coming to an end very soon Am i correct in thinking this ;(

I would take him to the vet as it does sound as though something is wrong but it's very hard to say exactly what it might be.
With any marked change in energy levels (hyper or very low energy) I would always check the urine for signs of diabetes too.

I agree with Cyper, a vet trip is definitely the best thing for him now. Plus, even if it turns out that nothing is wrong, it's always good for an older hamster to have a checkup! Like cypher also mentioned, a sign of diabetes is increased or decreased activity levels (and these tend to be very sudden like you've described). Do you notice he's been drinking or eating more? Does he look skinnier than usual with an overall hunched appearance? Is he urinating more often? You can get testing strips for diabetes from almost any general health store, or online. Typically, these test the urine of the affected hamster, but you'll need to ensure you've read the packaging with your individual strips. Good luck, hope all is well with him. Please keep us updated

Thanks guys. Definitely a big increase in appetite today. Drinking and weeing normally as far as I can see. He definitely looks skinnier but like I say he has turned grey so that's kind of expected I suppose with old age. Not hunched over no and doesn't seem wobbly on his feet, walking normally like he does day to day I think.

Obviously still worth a vet trip...

However, I think it wouldn't hurt to invest in those strips to see if diabetes could be an issue!

Best wishes

A vet trip is still needed, especially, if it is diabetes.

Hi guys, I woke this morning to him on his side in the corner of his cage. Thought he had passed but seems that he could be in some sort of coma. He is breathing still but just lying there. If I touch him he does wriggle a bit. But honestly I dont think he is suffering. Just waiting to fall into his deep sleep

I'm so sorry to hear he's doing so poorly

I would really recommend getting him to the vet ASAP. He's still pretty young so he may still have the strength to pull through, but only if you can get him in immediately. I hope everything turns out alright, please keep us updated

Sorry to hear he still isn't well, but I really think he needs to go to the vet, as I think he still could pull through. Even if the vets can't save him, they can help him on his way. You can never really know if he is suffering or not, as he can't tell you, but lying on his side doesn't sound too peaceful, otherwise he'd be in his nest.

Could he have gone into torpor?

Fingers crossed he's ok and please keep us updated.

I would ensure he's warm and comfy and make that vet appointment.
