Default Re: What is the Baytril dosage for a syrian?

Can I add as a side note there are two strengths of baytril- a cat one and dog one, so anyone refering to this thread thinking they may have a high/low dose compared to perhaps other pets they may have, bare this in mind.

Puddle did right in consulting their vet.

Please do not use HC to self medicate pets, always double check with your vet

Thanks Amethyst. Very good advice. Even for vets the dose can be difficult to work out as they have to factor in the faster metabolism of a hamster. My vet said that means they actually need a higher dose per weight sometimes.

I notice Puddle is a small Syrian from your other thread.

Yeah she is a Syrian, i imagine she will be fine with it in syringe as she pretty much lets me shove my finger in her mouth so doubt she will mind this

If not il get some food to mix it in.

When our late Henry was put on a course of Baytril, first of all the vet weighed him then got a chart to work out the dosage. The amount he had worked out was too much fluid at 0.8ml because he had used the Baytril for cats. He then worked out the dosage using Henry's weight and the Baytril for dogs which is a higher strength and came up with 0.2ml. Henry was a big Syrian weighing 230g in his prime.

I don't think there is a Baytril dosage for a Syrian as asked in this thread.

It depends on the hamster's ailment, weight and most importantly, what a competent vet prescribes.

That makes sense as the vet took a good 30 minutes to ring me back as he was working out the dosage etc.

She ran a mile when she smelt the baytril originally. Tried syringing into her mouth and she was surprisingly resistant and didnt like it at all so gave up with that idea and she went and hid for a few hours. Eventually got her to inspect half a grape covered in the baytril and she yummed it all up

Excellent. Just make sure there are no pips on the grape! I seem to remember they may be bad for hamsters (as with apple pips).

The important thing with food is to make sure she gets the full dose. So it doesn’t drop off eg but sounds like you got it sussed.

Personally I would double check the dose with the vet again as it does sound a bit low to me for a Syrian. It’s about the same as our Robo was getting. Although as amethyst said there are different strengths sometimes. With Metacam, dog metacam is stronger than cat Metacam but I thought baytril was just one strength.

Even if it is the stronger Baytril, as Ria says above, I would have thought it would be more like 0.1 or 0.2 of a ml. Just ask him to double check.

Hmm, Henry was on Baytril and then on Metacam. Maybe i got muddled up with the two regarding cat and dog strength but i agree, 0.02ml once a day does sound low for a Syrian.
Is that what it says on the label on the bottle which gives name, strength and dosage of the medication?

Looking back through other threads over the years, the dose of Baytril for a Syrian has either been 0.1 ml a day or 0.2 ml a day. 0.03ml is about a tenth smaller. So I would definitely ask the vet about it. I have had to do that before. Just say can you double check Ss other hamster owners have had bigger doses of Baytril.

The label says

"1.50 x Baytril 2.5% Oral (100)
Give 0.2ml in 100ml of water, every day for 7 days"
