What is the Baytril dosage for a syrian? - Page 2

It was 0.1ml twice a day for darcey after her spay. Other times they said just once a day. Hope your ham is ok RH x

Just noticed this! shazzy, my syrian is fine and wasn`t on Baytril but I wanted to find out from others what they had been prescribed for their syrians incase I ever did need some for my big lad Boris, who I`m happy to say, is in very good health and will be two years old soo.

Hi all sorry for bumping this thread but after peoples thoughts on Baytril. Waffles has a lump which the vet thinks os a skin abcsess and he has prescibed Baytril to be put into water.

The label says

"1.50 x Baytril 2.5% Oral (100)
Give 0.2ml in 100ml of water, every day for 7 days"

Im not certain she is drinking it and like others have said she cant be getting her full dose. Can anyone tell me if i can syringe this into her mouth neat or will the fact its meant for water mean its very strong?

I think you need to check with the vet. But 0.2 ml sounds about right for a Syrian (the dosage is worked out by weight) and usually in the Uk it is given on its own. It tastes absolutely foul and they don’t like it neat - I disguised it in beefy dog food after a tip on here and that worked well (just a pee sized amount). I would think it would put them off the water and as you say wouldn’t get the full dose either. It might be on the high side (the dose). I think it was 0.1 ml for our Syrian. So maybe the strategy bid to have the dose spread out - but I would raise the issue with the vet - ask if you can give it in food instead and if so would it be the same dose. You are right it is important they get the correct dose regularly or the bugs can become resistant to the antibiotic.

I would double check with your vet. I haven't needed to dose my hams with baytril for a very long time but I used to put the neat dose into some baby food and syringe it that way. Baytril is quite bitter tasting so it can put them off drinking from their water source if it's mixed in with it

Thanks guys, vet going to ring me back as they need to work it out but receptionist did say they had the exact same issue and question with the last hamster they had in.

Vet said 0.03ml by mouth mixed with tiny bit of fruit juice should do it. Thanks all.

Excellent. Is it for a dwarf hamster as that dose sounds right for a dwarf hamster. Runny honey is something people have found works of giving it by syringe.

I couldn’t syringe dose our Robo as he was tiny, untame and got too stressed. So I put it in the pea sized amount of beefy dog food . That is an option if syringing it doesn’t work.
