My little Orchid now 2 years old has cushings, i treated her for mites last year that did the trick for a while, but not now sadly. She is pure white syrian, losing fur on her back and legs, she is still happy though at the moment, so hopefully got her for a short while longerbut I wont let her suffer unecessarily. So glad for this sticky.

It made me very sad to see such a wonderful little hammy sick. However, I'm glad I read this. My Triscuit isn't even a year yet, and I want to be both emotionally and mentally prepared for in case she get sick so I can do my best to take care of her.

These pics let me know what to look out for and what I can do in case she gets affected. Thank you.

Harry is really poorly tonight ... I noticed that he hadn't gone through the tube into his sleeping cage last night, but had spent the night in his cottage in the second cage - he is walking hunched up into an arc and is physically unable to get into the tube. Furthermore, he is lifting his back left leg up and out as he walks. He also tipped off the cottage, trying to climb down via his log. He did potter about on the floor, but I lifted him back into his main cage and put everything in there for him tonight, including his medicated food. He has so little fur left now - only really on his rump - and I can't let him suffer any more. I always said that I would help him go to the rainbow bridge when the time came - it breaks my heart to think that it has come so suddenly, after he seemed to be making progress ...

Thought I should update, well the little one is still with us and lively as ever! She lost more fur but crazy enough the last week a thicker winter coat is coming through, bum fluff as we call it. She has super dry skin underneath so lots of oil to keep the skin in good condition.

She had put on a fair bit of weight put that down to less climbing more sleeping. I really question if she has cushings, which was diagnosed back in April. She is fine I'm herself and cheeky sod doesn't like being woken up bit me the other day, not a proper one just a warning put be back bite.

Question Re: Stages of Cushings Disease with illustrated pics (inc. treatment)

Thank you for posting this. I think my female robo hamster has this. My question is, when it maybe time to put her to sleep, what vets will do it? Also she is limping and loosing weight. I think she is reaching the end of her life span. They are so social I hated doing it but I separated her from her daughter. I think she may be attacking her and not letting her eat. I also did not add a wheel or climbing toys. Any extra advice is welcomed. Feel bad for the old girl.

Aww that's a wee shame, they just soldier on, it must of been heart breaking to watch over the months. Very good of you to share this with us though. None of my hamsters have taken I'll with Cushing's (touch hairy wood) so this is a good example of how to cope with it.

Any vet would be able to put your wee one to sleep when, and if, the time comes. I am so sorry this is happening to you. It's always so hard to see them become ill. You were right to separate them. Illness in one hamster frequently leads to attacks or bullying. It's why so many animals don't show that they are in pain until it's really bad. They become vulnerable. So, don't feel bad, you made it easier on her. Just love her and keep her as comfortable as you can.
