I've got to admit, I'm quite annoyed to see someone basically accuse SnickersTheFirst of letting Snickers suffer...
In the line before the last picture are the words "she was still happy" so thats probably why she let her hamster carry on life - it was happy.
When "She just wasn't herself and looked so ill" the ham was put to sleep. So my opinion - Snickers was given help to leave the world at the perfect time, when she needed it. Her owner letting her live until that point is nothing but good in my opinion.

I think you may be jumping to assumptions L T N. Snickers may look poorly in those pictures with her fur loss but she was still very strong and able to do her hamster things. Snickers owner knows her better than anybody else so was able to make the sad decision when the time came.Im guessing you have never had to make that decision yourself or you would understand. My hamster is going to the vets today to see if he has cushings and I hope Im as strong as Snickers was.

Thank you. We have to wait it out. Hopefully the treatment he's going thru for mites might help. Hopefully its not cushings but time will tell I guess.

I wanted to thank HC and Snickers once again for this thread, especially SnickersTheFirst, who shared lots of Snickers' ups and downs. Fur-nando has just been diagnosed with Cushings, and thanks to this previous exposure and information, I feel completely calm and prepared. He has already lost a lot of fluff, he had a skin scrape today to make double sure it wasn't any parasite, and it wasn't at all, but his pattern of loss matches Snickers' so well. I'm prepared to sand down the edges of his cardboard boxes and I have a big pot of Sudacrem in case he does get any tender bits (looking great so far though). Thanks so much, HC, I think I can happily let him carry on being him (he really hasn't changed at all!) and be confident that I can keep him safe as long as is necessary. x

I'm sorry about 'Nando Sam... He's an awesome little ham and I hope he's got lots of good times ahead of him yet

Thanks KD I will post a thread from him when I have a little more time, with photos and updates. He really is a very content, busy little fella. The only changes in his behaviour would be that he eats a bit more and drinks/pees a fair bit, but then, he's a big fella (195g), other than that, he is currently perfectly normal. He will be excited to update everyone with how he is doing - my third year of university hasn't been conductive to me having time to write much recently x

I think any discussion of illnesses or disease in our hammies is very important. And sharing this information can only help people and their hamsters. Quite often we don't find out things until something isn't right with a hammy and we don't get information until the vet tells us what's going on. Or our hammy passes and we don't know why. SnickersTheFirst has made it possible for all of us to recognize what is happening to our hammy if he/she gets Cushings, and to get treatment early. Good luck Sammybingo and Fur Nando.
