It has been an absolute blessing too. I don't drive and in the past we have had two rescued german shepherd girls, one after the other, they both were very ill before they had to be put to sleep after exploratory ops, and the number of times I just went straight to the vets with them without even phoning up first - the poor bairns could only walk very slowly, but at least we could get there. If OH was at home of course we took them in the car. I don't know if it's the same all over the country, but here you can't take dogs in taxis

It certainly is handy having a vet within walking distance Andrea. My old Labrador Murhy is just passed 13 now and his hips are terrible. He tootles along at his own pace poor wee soul, but I doubt he could even get into a taxi! I`ve said to mum that when he needs to `go`, I will call the vet out to the house because I don`t want him stressed out in his final hours. I don`t care a hoot about the cost. I know a lot of vets ask you to get to the surgery if you can, but I don`t want that.

Minicooper: I do hope you continue to have hamsters because after having Hammis, you`ll be lost without her! Owning hamsters, mice, gerbils or rats becomes part of you over time. Some people choose to own one animal and then don`t bother having another for different reasons. I had three rats before changing back to smaller rodents and I don`t regret it for one minute. I still love rats and am an active member of fancy rats forum, even though I don`t have any ratties! They are still an interest of mine and always will be.

yes, owning animals is a big part of your life.........big or small, they still seem to get into your heart

have you ever had bigger animals,, such as rabbits, guinea pigs?????

When you were younger did your parents let you have any pets??? .......sorry for asking so many questions I am just inquizitive...

Many moons ago when I was a teenager, I had a white rabbit and also a guinea pig called Pip! I do like guinea pigs! I think having more than one pet is fine, as long as you can commit time to each animal. If you feel over burdenned, then you have too many!

I feel I have enough right now and would be pushing my own barriers to the limit if I took on anymore. You have to be fair to that particular pet and make sure they have quality time with you and freedom from their cage. I hate to think there are many mice, gerbils, hamsters, rats and larger rodents out there, shut in a cage 24 hours a day. That`s not what keeping pets is all about, that`s confining an animal to solitary confinement in a way.

My mum was always tollerant of me having little pets and she still loves them all. She does`nt handle them or take to do with their daily maintenance (that`s my job!), but she thinks they are beautiful.

yes, I have to clean hammis cage out once a week, so you still live at home??

yes keeping animals in solitary confinement is out of order, not just small animals larger animals aswell, i.e. keeping a dog indoors and not taking it out for walks, I take hammis out every night for a play and a sniff around.

thats why my parents say I cant have any more pets as you have to have a hour or so a day to have some quality time with them.

Yep, I`m at home with mum who`s 67 now! We share joint tennancy and live well together. So unless I win on the Lottery, I`m staying put!

I suppose I`ll be company for mum too because my step dad passed away about five years ago and mum would be living alone if I went elsewhere.
