I apologize for the delay in responding to you. Stinky recovered from the pneumonia but apparently had pyometra as well. She was too ill to undergo a hysterectomy; she was actually too "depressed" for the necessary anesthetic. We reluctantly resorted to euthanasia. The whole experience was so painful I needed some time before I could chat with you.

Thanks to all of you that offered advice. Three Vets did not do as well at coming up with a diagnosis as you all did. I appreciate your experience. We will be getting another hamster in time for New Year's. They're just too cute to snuggle to be without one.

Do you, PersonalityHamsters, know of a good hamster Vet in Southern California? I'm in Orange near the border of Villa Park and Anaheim Hills. Also, is there another source for hamsters, othr than the local PetsMart?

So sorry to hear of your loss. You did the right thing in giving Stinky the most precious gift of all, peaceful rest from her pain. RIP Stinky.
Sometimes experience just gives you a special feeling and you can just recognise an illness in a hamster which sadly has happened to one of yours. Even if the vet had recognised it, it is very rarely curable.
I look forward to meeting your new friend when you are ready and when you choose one, since you have children and it is hard for them to see a pet ill, might a suggest a little boy hamster as at least pyometra is one illness you can exclude in a male.
