all the hamsters i know were like crazy when they saw their sand bath the first time. neither of them had had a sand bath in the pet store. the excitement can wear off but they all use it...at least as a toilet. its fun to watch them digging and rolling over

Re: DIY Sandbaths
In the past I have used a ceramic terracotta type dish, which did the job a treat, and used tissue boxes, which provide jolly climby chewing things too. Now I have one of the Superpet Critter Baths, which I do adore, he just looks so cute in it. I got it for that reason - my pleasure :P. He sits in it through most of his awake time and has a really good groom in it every ten minutes when he is up. He loves it! For those on facebook, here is Chewy being pet of the week (muahah, twice) - Super Pet USA | Facebook

Re: DIY Sandbaths
I am going to have to try this out with Dexter. Do you do it once a day or week? Or do you leave it in there all the time?
Also do you use chinchilla sand? x

Re: DIY Sandbaths
Beware though. Charlie Chinchilla do a dust (not good for hams, and I have one I ordered by accident if anyone has / knows of a chinchilla house!) and a sand. It's definately the sand you want. I leave Chewbaccas bath in all the time and change the sand once a week.

Re: DIY Sandbaths
yep, charlie chinchilla SAND not dust
Also childrens playsand that you can get for like £4 from argos for a big bag is good!
Although with only 1 hamster you may not want that much

Re: DIY Sandbaths
Also,as have just bought a bag of play sand from tesco - you have to let it dry out first - it kinda sweats in the bag and is quite damp - suppose it needs to be like this so that the kids can make their snadcastles more easily! Pain for us hammy folks though!

Re: DIY Sandbaths
Where do you get the sand from? Is there specific 'hamster sand' that you can get from a pet shop?
