Default Meet Gwendolyn!!

I put out a want ad in my local area for a hamster in need of a home (rather then purchase one from a pet store) I had a few responses but nothing really close. However I finally got an email from a person looking to re-home her escape artist ham! Apparently she had some cats and was concerned about it. She was a college student and Im not sure she had enough time for her either.

Anyway shes now in her nice her bin cage! She hasnt gone to sleep yet but is taking it easy in a corner behind her igloo. She came with some nice hamster treats, which I have given to her. Hopefully she will settle in well and inst to stressed. Smoo and I decided to call her Gwendolyn, because shes a little princess and something about that name sounds royal to me hehe.

This person has owned her for about two months from being purchased at the pet store. So she not that old at all, but a pretty good size already! I managed to get some pictures! maybe someone can tell me what color she is? Shes kind of dark then the typical golden ham coloration, or maybe not?

Sniffing out her food dish!

Sneaking up on her unsuspecting wheel (or else startled by the camera)

Checking out her new sand bath! Im not sure shes ever seen one.

Sniffing the wheel! she so cute!

Cute picture of her while she was trying to escape!

Hmm Golden Umbrous, thanks Red.

She is rather dark.. her back looks pretty much black, and as you can see in the pictures, she has more of a dark gray then white on her belly. But she does have those distinctive black striped cheeks you see in the Golden hams.

Umbrous aren't really different, all it is, in appearance, is the white-ish bits, such as the cheek flashes and the under side are darker than the normal Golden... you can get this in Cinnamon and other colours.

I have a Blonde Umbrous, and have had Cinnamon Umbrous in the past... overall the hammy generally looks darker...

Some updates on Gwen,

She seems to be doing pretty well.. though she still isn't sleeping in her igloo and is sleeping behind it. I gave her a small piece of carrot last night and this morning - she seems to like carrots! I haven't seen her use the water bottle yet, but she does know where her food is. I found a bunch of big dark hamster poops near her water bottle.. I think she may have fell asleep there with some food. Well at least I know she's eating.

Gwen's a pretty timid hamster.. I'm not sure how much she's been handled. Gerald didn't mind being picked up. Gwen is just a bit unsure. She's inquisitive enough to come over but always does so with caution. When I try and pet her she flinches a bit and raises her front paws. It's just going to take some time before she gets use to me. I don't blame her she's in a new place with new smells. At least she does let me pet her a bit.

Hello Gwenny What a lucky girl you are to have found a home with Snuggleham and Smoo
She is a lovely Umbrous Golden, you don't see many with such dark shading like that around.
Umbrous gene has the effect of making a hamster look like it has been rolling in the mud/ash of a fire.
I am sure she will settle in and love to be held eventually.
Keep going slow like you are, keep talking and offering yummy foods and she will learn to trust you very soon I am sure.
How exciting

Oh so Gwen is a bit of an usual Umbros ham then! Coolies.. ill let her know.. Im sure it will make her feel even more special and royal :P

She quite lively, she's up and about the cage quite often. Im not use to it, but then Iv been living with an elderly hamster prior.. Im sure its normal behavior for a younger ham. I still havnt seen her use the water bottle, so I placed a bowl of water in front of it just incase.

Thanks pophammy!

She settling in just fine! In fact I was about to update on her. Shes doing very well and I woke up with morning to find shes figured out the igloo and I think may have been sleeping in it last night. At lest she took her piece of carrot in there this morning to munch on it.

I love that shes young and so curious! She wakes up to come see what going on when she hears me and hubby wake up and come into the room. If you come talk to her in her cage she waddles right over! Like I said.. living with Gerald an old ham.. he was a bit more laid back. If you did anything in his cage and he was asleep hed stir, roll over and fall asleep again. The exception was if you had a treat he would sniff out the entrance if his igloo.

Not Gwen! she comes right over. I think shes starting to get the idea that if she does she gets a piece of carrot each morning hehe. Shes still a bit flinchy around loud noises or sudden movements. I managed to get her out of her cage and hold her! Man is she a big ham! Heavy too! Very full and well rounded. She didnt seem to mind being handled at all, but I kept it short the first time.

I gave her a weigh and shes 138g... is that normal for a female syrian! lol? Anyway.. all is well, and she just the most adorable little thing!
