Unhappy Having a hamster while at uni?

I feel rly guilty about leaving my hamster at home when I go to uni but I don’t have a choice as they don’t allow animals ( The one I’m going to is only about 1/2 hour - 40 mins from home so I’ll be coming home most weekends to check up on her but other than that my mum will be feeding and looking after her and I feel rly bad about it is anyone in the same position? How do u deal with it?

I think that a lot depends on how your mum looks after your hamster and what your hamster is used to.

If for example your hamster is a very independent and self contained hamster who is not keen on human interaction and out of cage time, then it won't really matter that much who feeds and looks after him/her.

If your hamster likes human interaction and asks for attention and out of cage time and your mum is able to provide that, then the hamster will get used to a different human.

If your hamster is all of the above but your mum is only willing to feed and water your hamster and nothing else, then it may be kinder to rehome him/her to someone who can give him/her what he/she needs.

I think it's not so much a matter of you feeling guilty but to provide for the hamster what he/she needs. If you do that, then you won't feel guilty.

I meant to add that when i was 17 i had a guinea pig and then went off to nursing school which was live in and quite a distance away. I had no choice but to leave the guinea pig in the care of my mother who became very fond of the guinea pig. The guinea pig was then very much my mother's pet and totally ignored me when i was home. He only responded to my mother and didn't like my father who was a very nice man.

It seems unusual not to be allowed a hamster in your room at University. I know a lot of people do (and space is usually the issue). Which University is it? Also if the rules say no pets, sometimes they make exceptions for a hamster in a cage.

I think if your Mum is prepared to look after it fully - out of cage time etc and not just feeding and watering, then that's an option. If tame the hamster should be ok with anyone and remember you (maybe guinea pigs are different that way?) My stepson isn't here all the time and our hamsters always perked up when he was around. Although it's true that they preferred to be handled by me or OH. But yours already knows you. And if you're seeing her at week-ends that's not too long a gap.

I just know a number of people on here have had a hamster in their rooms at University! Lots of talk about where to fit a cage in their room! Maybe university rules vary. It could be worth emailing the provost asking if it's ok to have a very small hamster in your room who lives in a cage which would cause no problems. You could tell them he's a therapy pet (although they might ask for a GP letter then to say he's a therapy pet!). So maybe not, if you don't need a therapy pet!

The provost is usually the person who deals with any personal or welfare issues I think.

Most house rental agreements say no pets as well but they usually agree to a hamster if you ask, because it's a small caged pet. I've had special dispensations in holiday cottages as well.

I am at university but I never bothered with university accommodation. I was at an advantage since I rented somewhere owned by my partners mum and rented at a reduced amount but that flat did allow some animals. Then we moved to where we are now which is still a flat that you have to ask for permission for the animal but you are allowed them. Also this isn’t a shared flat meaning a landlord would need to give prior warning before entering there’s a lot more rules so you would have time to hide animals lol.

I don’t think universities usually do allow animals but if you haven’t asked definitely do. I have heard of ones not allowing animals and people hiding them in cupboards when the cleaners come round but that’s no life for an animal in my opinion. So your choices are look around for pet allowed flats near the uni or ask the uni and accept the response.

I do agree with Ria though if your hamster can’t come with you, I’d consider rehoming them if your mum will not give them the proper attention. Just because there is no way you’ll go uni without needing some form of additional income because your student loan will not cover all the costs. And if you work, normally small jobs will get you to come in on weekends and if this is your only time to come home then you won’t be able to see your hamster as much as you think.

The only thing I will say is if you haven’t had your university timetable yet I think you’ll find you’ll have A LOT more free time than you think. I’ll try upload a picture of mine so you get an idea.

Most of my lectures occur on a Monday and I’m thinking if you drive, I’d actually strongly consider living at home for university. This sounds weird but accommodation is costly and if you only need to go uni 2-3 times a week you’d save a lot of money only having to pay for fuel and stay home with your hamster. Also most of my lectures are online as well meaning you don’t even have to show up, you can watch from home.

Obviously you might want to fly the nest so to speak and I know I did, but my university was about 1 to and 1 and half drive from where I was living. And I don’t drive so I had to move. I’d just consider potentially staying at home.

Maybe depends which course it is? I did an English degree as a mature student and only had to go in twice a week! Everything else was done in my own time. Just one lecture and one seminar a week. Whereas science students had a 9 to 5 timetable Monday to Friday and had to be there all the time.

Sorry for the quality of picture but you can see I only have lessons Monday Tuesday and Friday and all of them have an online option. Also I had to go back in the calendar as we broke up on the 25th March. Next week I’ll have three revision lectures before my exams and then I have no more lectures for the year and I’ll rejoin in October for my final year. You get so much time to insane.
