Unhappy New hamster

Hello to anyone who can help !
I recently bought a hamster and have owned him for around almost a week . I started him off in a critter tails cage and soon realized it was too small and not very good as he kept biting the cage. I upgraded him and he seemed to like his new cage a lot better as he began to play with toys and burrow. He has not touched his wheel once and I’m starting to get worried. I’ve also tried to move him into a playpen to get more playroom and he seemed scared so I let him be since then. I’m worried he is not getting enough exercise and he doesn’t play on his wheel or really run around his cage too much. He sleeps a lot and at night comes out but from what I’ve seen just watch. Should I be worried ? Is this him just getting used to his new home ? I’m just worried and want him to be healthy . I’ll be more than happy to accept criticism. I just don’t know what to do. He’s a robo dwarf hamster.

Hello and welcome to HC!

First of all i would advise you to slow down, you, not your Robo.

You've only just got him and already moved him to a new cage so he hasn't had a chance yet to settle in. He is probably scared and nervous. Robos are naturally timid and shy.

I'm glad that you quickly realized that a Crittertrail is an awful cage and not fit for any hamster.

What kind of cage does he live in now?
Robos are burrowers so he'll need deep, ideally paperbased substrate to build his underground tunnels. He'll need plenty of shelter and hidey places to feel secure.
What kind of wheel does he have? Does it spin freely and easily? Can he reach it?
Does he have a sandbath?

As for the playpen. I'd forget about it for now. That's for much later, if at all.
What's important for the moment is to get his set up right, let him settle in and become familiar and confortable in his new home and then i'd think of attempting to tame him.

Is he eating and drinking ok? Does his water bottle work and can he reach it? These questions may sound silly but that's the kind of routine checks i do.

I've recently moved my Robo into a bigger cage and he's gone all shy now. I've hardly seen him since he moved but that's down to him getting used to his new surroundings and perfectly normal. It may take him a few weeks to feel completely at home and confident to be out and about doing his hamster stuff while i'm near his cage. He goes on his wheel when its dark and nobody's about.
Put a bit of substrate on top of your hamster's wheel. If its gone in the morning he has probably used it.

Most hamsters sleep during the day and are active at night.

Hello ! So I moved him into a multi level cage with a good bottom part to burrow in and top part to eat, drink, roam around. It is definitely an upgrade from the other cage but I do want to get something bigger but of course I do want to wait so I do not stress him out. The cage seems to fit him a lot better. He had a 6.5 inch wheel and yes he can reach it. The thing I have not gotten is a sand bath, I wasn’t sure of good brands or anything to get because I was scared because of the respiratory issues many people had mentioned. Any recommendations? & yes he seems to be eating pretty well and I personally have not seen him drink water but it does work and it is at a height where he can reach. But I do assume he has since he has been eating well.

Hello,

It's great that you're researching proper care for your hamster. Robos come from sandy regions so you could have up to 1/3 of the bottom of your cage covered in sand. The cheapest option is to buy a baking dish of the right size, and some children's play sand that you bake (yes it is weird) by placing it in the oven at 200º celsius degrees for 20/30 minites. Then you leave it to cool down entirely. This will dry the sand, avoiding respiratory issues, and will kill any parasite. Hamsters don't need multi level cages (they can fall and hurt themselves) but large, unbroken floor space to run around. 80 x 50 cm is considered the minimum, including for robos, who are very high energy and not always easy to handle / play with of the cage. You wnat to know more about hamsters? Check Victoria Raechel's youtube channel and her videos with her robo Tater Tot. You want to buy or be inspired by amazing hamster products? Check rodipet's website. Best of luck and have fun with your little robo.
