Default Share your hamster escapades!

Following on from a post by Mom about a hamster who hitched a ride to a pound store, I thought I’d start a thread for fun, for us to share the things our hamsters have got up to. I am sure there are some stories - particularly re escapes and funny moments. So fire away! My experience was with my first hamster (who was actually a boyfriend’s hamster) who used to escape the living room by hitching a ride on the back of my long dressing gown

In my house, we have a bar, (like the type with a little fridge for drinks) and the hamster cage used to be on a little table right beside the bar. One day, he was running around on the table, and climbed up into the hollow part of the bar. We had to lift the entire top off of the bar, and then look inside. We finally located him, and tried to lure him out. He didn't come. After about 10-15 minutes of anxious waiting, he finally came out, and he went back into his cage. Later, when we got him a new, better, cage, we moved it away from the bar, and he never went in there again.

I was at work overnight and left my OH to hamstersit. I just phoned him to see if we needed groceries.

He told me that when he got up this morning he saw something scurrying about in his trousers, which he had in a truly manly fashion dropped on the floor.

It wasn't a mouse but mousesized Clarissa who was running around and must have been out all night!!
He put some mealworms down and Clarissa immediately appeared to eat them. He scooped her up and put her back in her cage. That's when he realized that her Hamster Heaven door was shut on the first bar and not the second. Opportunist hamster Clarissa had squeezed herself through the small gap and escaped for the night.

Needless to say that he was incredibly lucky not to have lost Clarissa who could have ended up absolutely anywhere.

We try really hard to keep this little hamster safe but we keep running into mishaps.

The second hamster I ever had, Effie, had her tank on top of a large upright fridge freezer in the kitchen. One night I clearly hadn't latched the door fully, and somehow, she has clambered up to the top, shimmied down the freezer, through the living room, up two sets of stairs, and into the bedroom. We only found out when we heard a terrifying rustling in the dark and turned the light on to see her washing herself busily on the floor.
