Default Fork’s Thread!

My boy is getting up there in age so i decided to make a thread for him to share pictures and health updates as he has been needing more and more frequent vet visits. He is very near and dear to my heart and I hope you all will like seeing his photos! https://ibb.co/KL2h2SV here he is when he was much younger

Fork came to me in a rather unfortunate circumstance as he was offered to me by an acquaintance who said she couldn’t care for him anymore. There turned out to be much more to the story than this. Her sister had bought two hamsters while she was away at college but was told she couldn’t keep them in her dorm so she gave them to her little sister. These little guys that were supposedly brothers were actually male and female and the female quickly gave birth to pups. The girl didn’t know what to do so she left all the hamsters alone and the pups were culled overnight. As you all can expect, there were more litters (she did not specify how many) and eventually the mother and all but one baby passed away. Fork was separated from the remaining baby and put in a hamster ball for an unknown amount of time until he came to me.

I fostered his daughter who i named Peanut a few months later when the same girl wanted to rehome her as well. She was absolutely terrified and screamed constantly any time she saw me near her cage. She was rehomed to a patient adult owner with a quiet household where she is much more comfortable and has been there for about a year now.

Fork taught me so much about hamster care and i’m so glad he’s made it to 2.5 years old! I love my little old man so much and i’m glad he is now out of that situation and living his retirement peacefully with me

sorry for the long post!

Thank you so much for sharing Fork's story.

What a traumatic and unhappy life all these poor hamsters must have had but i'm glad that at least two survived and lived to enjoy a happy ending.

It makes me so sad knowing what happened to the others, especially the mother. I wish i could have helped her too but i’m just glad Fork has lived a very long life and has spent the majority of his life with me in comfort.

Fork’s URI came back he was wheezing and puffing horribly earlier but we got some metacam and baytril from the vets so hopefully he’s going to get feeling better. he lost 10 grams in about two weeks and he looks quite dull and sick, i feel so bad for my little guy but hopwfully the medicine will help him

Maybe he's tired and just wants to sleep now which is not a bad thing for a hamster of his age. Enjoy every minute you have with him because time with him is precious.

I've been taking him out every chance I get for some snuggle time but he's been spending most of his time in his multichamber hideout. I worry how much time I have left with him.. he probably does just want to sleep because he's elderly and sick

My hamster was like that but i still spent as much time as i could sitting by his cage talking to him. He may have been asleep and couldn't interact with me but at least he was still there and breathing....until he stopped and drifted away peacefully.

I'm not trying to be morbid and maybe your hamster will recover from his illness but mine had also lost a lot of weight and the vet had tried antibiotics but then he got more and more tired and weak so i decided to let nature take its course and make him as comfortable as possible which, in fact, turned out to be the right decision.

Not sure it helps you for me to talk about my hamster but i just want you to know that i understand how hard it is when our furry friends get old and become sick.

thank you for this. he is very elderly at this point and the URI has been continuously coming back and going away for two months now but he’s finally starting to really get tired and weak now so i’m starting to think he’s just reaching his time. i just hope he passes peacefully at home because bringing them home to bury after the vet is too painful for me so i will 100% pay the 200$ to have him privately cremated. i just want him to pass peacefully in his home where he’s comfortable.
