First time owning dwarf hamsters
Hello everyone,
I’ve recently just brought 2 winter white dwarf hamster which I believe might be hybrids as not many winter whites are pure breed now but anyways their names are sugar and spice. This is my first time owning dwarf hamster as I’ve only owned 2 syrian hamster before. I’m know quiet a bit about Syrian hamster care but not much about dwarf hamster care. Is there any differences which I should know? I knew that you could house them together which I did until one started bullying the other so I separated them as I had a spare cage. Will they every be able to share a cage again or will they be separated forever now that they started fighting.
Thank you for any tips on owning dwarf hamster
From Elise x

Re: First time owning dwarf hamsters
Congrats on getting your first Russians, they will be hybrids, you can only get pure breds from a good breeder.
It’s good that you separated them, they won’t ever be able to go back together, as a pair in a cage or for out of cage time.
They are solitary & it’s not natural for them to live together so you’ve done the right thing for them.
The main difference is diet, they do have different needs & are prone to diabetes so it is important to get a good quality dwarf specific mix & avoid any sweet foods including fruit or treats with honey, dried fruit etc.
If you’re in the UK then the Rodipet mix is the best, there are others, the bunny dwarf. hamster dream is ok but not as good available from Zooplus, Mixerama & Getzoo also do very good mixes but delivery costs are very high.
There’s a recent thread here with questions & answers about keeping dwarf hams you might find helpful too.
The next step...

Re: First time owning dwarf hamsters
Seperating them is the best thing you can do. You are right. They could live together, BUT that doesn't mean they Should. In the wild they have infinite space to get away from each other however in captivity they can't so it's always best to have 1 hamster per cage. So don't try and reintroduce them.
Care wise everything is the same except food like cypher says. With your Syrians did you have a sand bath? Dwarf species LOVE them so I'd look to getting some sand if you haven't already
Now for the most important thing...can we have a photo of sugar and spice

Yes I do have a sand bath for each of them and it was quiet funny watching them actually roll around in them as my Syrians never did that they just dug in it.
Also yes how can I put a photo on here?

Thank you for the reply. I have brought the bunny dwarf hamster dream food and I’m thinking about mixing it with the science selective pellets to get the protein up as the bunny food is only 15.5%. I have researched how to mix food properly and I will be using this Calendar on the hamster hideout forum to calculate how much of each food I will need together.

There's a really useful thread about how to post photos at How To Embed Photos - I used it myself for the first time the other week.
