Default Syrian Adopted... Hubby brought home a surprise!!

I cant help but laugh after seeing about three new posts to my "Might adopt a Syrian’s thread saying how they were sorry I didn’t get to adopt it in the end.

Well my husband came home from work bearing a gift in a box that was cut full of holes. I took it reluctantly worried it was some joke and something was about to jump out at me, but when I flipped the lid back there was an adorable long haired golden colored Syrian hamster staring back at me and sniffing the air..

Yes it was Gerald, that hamster I was hoping to adopt!! Apparently in the end the kid decided they didn’t want it and my husbands co worker brought him into work for my hubby to bring home to me.

I had a little anxiety attack I think when I realized I didn’t have a cage for him :P, But we got a 10 gallon from the attic and I made a temporary cage.

I feel horrible though, the owners for some reason never gave me the old cage he was in, all they sent over was Gerald and a water bottle and a small wood wedge toy thing. He has no wheel to run on and not nearly the right amount of cage space.

I wasn’t that surprised to see that he was sent over with cedar shavings in the box. They looked awfully uncomfortable, large hard pieces of wood. I’m sure he must love his new carefresh bedding. I was horrified to see what they were feeding him, at lest I think they were feeding him. There was a small plastic bowl with what look like Budgie seed or wild bird feed. I can’t say I have ever seen hamster food being sold that looked so basic like this, usually there is corn and alfalfa pellets and sunflower seeds. They even sent a zip lock bag with him that had more feed in it that make me believe they were in fact giving him this.

Ill take some picture of it tomorrow and of Gerald. I’m sad they kept the cage. I can’t see any reason of wanting to keep it unless they plan to get another rodent.

I stopped at wal-mart and bough more carefresh, I’m going through it like crazy now, I have two roborovskis in a fairy large tank, one gerbil in the bin cage I made and now a Syrian hamster. I was going to get a bin but they didn’t have any I liked with locking lids so ill be looking for one tomorrow. That hamster needs a larger cage and wheel fast!

Gerald is a huge hamster. Not fat just big lol.. I don’t know Iv ever seen a ham that large. They think he’s one or two years old. I gave him lab blocks and mixed that in with hamster feed so as not to stress him out by changing his food. But its way better then whatever he was on before.

The first time he sniffed a lab block picked it up in his mouth and ran around the box with it, it was so cute.. It was like he was trying to find a place to horde it. He managed to get a full sized lab block in his cheek pouch! I was worried he might not be able to get it back out but he did.

He’s extremely friendly and very docile, he crawled on my husbands hands are arms and just kind of sniffed around.

I’m a little worried about him, being in a new place and a small cage, new bedding and new food. But I gave him a cardboard house thats nice and dark and warm and he seems to like that. He seems a bit shaky I think from nervousness but he’s exploring his new environment and checking it out.

I gave him a sand bath for something different to do so it’s not so boring in there. I hope he takes well to the change and doesn’t catch wet tail.

Well Ill get picture tomorrow and hopefully a bigger cage.. I’m so happy I was able to save him!! I’m running out of room for rodents here lol

Ok I have a few pictures now...

First here is a picture of that seed I was telling you about. To me it looks like wild bird feed consisting mostly of budgie seed. Is that a kind of hamster feed they actually sell?. If so then it doesn’t see very substantial for a large Syrian like this.

Here is the cage that I put together pretty fast the other day. Its a 10 gallon fish tank and way to small for a Syrian. Especially as large as Gerald! I planned on going out today to find a bin to modify into a nice large cage for him. But luck it that a winter storm had to come in and we are under and winter storm advisory until 5pm tonight. Its been snowing like crazy all day! At this point we will probably see at lest 5 inches by that time. I don’t think we will be getting out like I hoped today.

And here are a couple of pictures of Gerald. I didn’t try and push my luck to much getting the perfect shots, I don’t want to stress him out. I’m sure Ill get better pictures in the future

I really want to get him settled into a proper cage. If he wakes up later on tonight and seems active ill clean out my gerbil ball and let him run around in that and maybe explore a bit in my lap.

Woooooo hoooooooo! Candacebell! I can't believe it all worked out so well in the end! Thats great news! I only just finished reading the first post about the possibility just last night! I'm so happy for you and for Gerald. What a happy ending. I'm sure he'll settle down in no time - with all the fun things to explore and loving parents he'll have a happy life now for sure!

Keep those photos coming, he's adoreable!

I know I didn’t really see that one coming!! But I was very happily surprised!! And the funny thing was the next time I checked the forum after I knew I had him I found you had left a comment on the old thread.

But really I’m overjoyed to have him; hopefully I'll be able to get a better cage set up for him tomorrow. My in laws are going on a vacation for a week and they will have the digital camera so it will be a short while until I can get some really good ones.

And picture of the new cage when I get it together, it will most likely be a bin cage \/

Well I'm sure right now he doesn't care what cage he's in! I bet he's happy cause his nose and eyes aren't hurting because there is this nice soft bedding in there and I'll bet his tummy isn't rumbling any more either!

Default Too true

Coco you said it all so nicely. Gerald is a lucky guy indeed and I am sure he loved that fatty seed mix but the lab blocks will be far more healthy for him, I wonder what the state of his teeth are? He was in an aquarium you were told I think, so I wonder if they are maybe going to get a fish???

Hmmm, thats right.. I think I did say that, but I’m not all that sure.. I think I said it was the Guinea pig that was in a small aquarium?

Anyway I probably should check his teeth sometime today. Last night we managed to get out and I looked to find a bin but there weren’t any I liked, the large ones were to tall and didn’t have locking lids.

I wish I could find the exact same one I made for my gerbil. Its perfect because its long clear, had awesome locking lids, but it doesn’t look to tall or bulky.

So Gerald had to stay in the tank another night. But I did stop at a pet store. So now he has a nice ceramic bowl and an igloo house and a nice large comfort wheel. He’s such a big ham, although I love those silent spinner I think he would have been to large for it.

Last night I had him out on my lap, he is so friendly and cute, It seems he belong more on someone lap then in his cage. Last night he ran on his wheel some. I think its good I introduced his igloo and wheel, so he can get use to it and get his scent on it, so when he moves into the big cage he will have some nice things he will recognize.

Default Tameness

His tameness at least is a good sign he has not been totally neglected. When you check his teeth see how yellow they are is helps a little determine how old the hamster is as they get really dark with age.

Aw bless, he looks very sweet in those pics, if a little bewildered! Good that you got to give him a good home eventually, I hope he enjoys the rest of his life with you!

You might want to introduce the lab blocks to his old diet slowly? His old diet looks pants obviously, but a sharp change might not be good for him especially with the upheaval of moving and everything.

Congrats on the new ham now you're going to have to learn to start saying "no"!!!!

I'll say "no" for now, But as soon as there is more space I'll be saying "yes"!!

I have been giving him a seed mix: Kaytee fortified diet. He seems to like that. So far he’s hoarding and seems to be eating healthily and drinking well. He has been waking up to run on his wheel and seems very hardy.

I managed to find a nice bin cage and put it together and he’s now living in it in. Lots of space, a nice igloo, wheel, sand bath. I’m sure he’s much better off.

Next week I'll get some more good pictures of him and his new bin cage.
