Default *My new little dwarf*

Hi guys,

Firstly, I just wanted to thank you again for all the kind words you said about my beloved Roly and for all the help and advice you have given me since regarding dwarf hamsters.

Well guess what... I went to a pet shop with my Dad who wanted to buy some fish stuff and went off to look at the small animals with no intension of adopting one just yet. BUT... one of them really pulled at my heartstrings. A little 8 month old dwarf hamster arrived at the store just before lockdown in March meaning he couldn't be adopted. He had also been attacked by his siblings so had to be kept separate and receive treatment. They said he is so lovely and enjoys having his tummy tickled! I went home and just couldn't stop thinking about him, I just knew I had to rescue him. So I am now the very proud owner of a super adorable male dwarf. I couldn't bare to think he may end up living his whole little life at a pet shop and I know he's older, but I feel I can offer him a very loving and happy 'retirement' home.
I spent a few days getting the cage all ready before collecting him and he appears to have settled in really well. He absolutely loves his wheel which he didn't have at the store and enjoys munching on his whimzee.
I haven't yet named him and when he's completely settled I will try and get a photo. He's grey with patches on him, so very cute!
I have bought the Bunny Dream for Dwarfs food but am currently freezing it. He has been used to Beaphar Dwarf pellets but I will gradually try and change him across. The Bunny Dream has mealworms in it, are they ok to freeze? Also, roughly how much food should I put in his bowl daily, about a tablespoon? I have read they have fast metabolisms and can eat the same amount as Syrians, is this correct?
Thanks a lot.

*** Love and miss you always Roly ***

That’s great news, congrats!
I’m sure he must be one very happy ham to have found such a lovely home after all his time in the shop.
Look forward to seeing photos & hearing more about him when he’s settled.

It’s fine to freeze the bunny mix, I don’t freeze mealworms otherwise are they are freeze dried but they do seem to be fine if you freeze a bag of food with them in.
They don’t normally eat as much as a Syrian I don’t think but it does vary, some may only eat about a teaspoon a day but he will be making a stash too so needs extra for that, you’ll soon get an idea of how much he’s eating & what he needs but it’s always better to give more rather than less as they don’t tend to overeat.

Thanks Cypher.

I hope i haven't misled people by putting 'rescue' in the heading as he's not actually from a rescue centre. I just meant i felt i had rescued him. I tried editing my post but not sure it worked.

Rolyrocks, congrats. don't worry about the word rescue, sounds to me like you rescued him, especially if he had no wheel for his entire life. For once I actually remembered to freeze my hamster food and I had the bunny dreams one which was fine.

It's so sad that that hamster had been in the petshop all that time. He's very lucky to have been adopted by you. I can't imagine a hamster being happy to have their tummy tickled - that'll be something that'll be fun for you to find out once he's settled in and got used to you.

That's so lovely. I adopted a male Syrian I named Fitz from a petshop's adoption scheme. He was a pre-owned surrender, aparently the family that owned him before just had too many animals. He was older, at least a year, and he was tiny, but he was well cared for and very tame and friendly. I had some reservations about getting an older hamster but he lived another 16 months with me and he was the lovliest little guy. I miss him.

I hope you and your new little pal have the best time together!

Thank you so much everyone, you are all so lovely!

I forgot to ask if you should freeze millet? Also, is it safe for them to always have some in their cage or just give as a treat occasionally?

Sorry, last question... I went for a Trixie Wooden Wheel in the end as I was already placing a Zooplus order and Roly was always very happy with his larger one. I used Plastikote to seal it but what do people use to clean them? I have the Johnsons Clean 'n' Safe Disinfectant for small animals, will this be ok to use?

Thanks again!

I would freeze millet. It should be fine to leave some in the cage all the time, some eat more of it than others, if you’re ham ate a lot of the millet rather than the main mix then you might want to leave some time before putting more in but most probably won’t do that.
I just use water to clean my wheels, you shouldn’t really need to use disinfectant.
