Thanks Luna, Cypher and Maker - haha I'd say mid range loo roll

I attempted a dry bath explore with Kobe last night.
He seemed very uneasy in a new environment.

I had a selection of the yummiest dried fruit and nuts and offered them to him one by one but he was far too focused on finding his way back to the safety of his enclosure so I soon gave in and took him back.

Think I will try a smaller space like a large box for my next attempt.

Aww bless him! I think the whole bath thing can be a bit much for some of them to begin with, probably scents that are very different for them, maybe see if you can make/get a playpen or block off a safe area closer to his cage & try sitting in with him.

Yes, completely agree Cypher.
Worth a go but I think I will give the adjustable playpen a try.

Just fed Kobe some sugar snaps and baby corn. He was keen enough to try them that it seemed to override his shyness

(Check him out giving my thumb a good sniff on the last picture!)

Kobe really is so so cute!! That little dark nose poking out from the white substrate is simply adorable.
He's definitely becoming braver unless he wanted to make sure that your thumb isn't something edible.

None of my hamster felt at ease in the bath tub. I think a bath tub is only useful when we sit in there with them to let them safely run around on our legs, climb up our arms etc as a means of getting them used to us and our smell.

I had some success with past hamsters in the bath tub but it's clearly not the case with Kobe so I haven't tried again.

I also tried a small play area on carpeted floor with hides etc but he still seemed distressed and looking for a way back to his familiar closure.

Since then, I've focused solely on handfeeding him in his enclosure and letting him give my hands a sniff. Hoping gradually he'll get used to me but it seems like slow progress

Ooh he's so adorable Those little paws and the spaghetti Just a tip I've found with a lift off roof for a house - a shy hamster may move out again if you lift the roof off while they're in the house. I have had to learn to resist peeking and only lift the roof off for emptying the toilet/spot cleaning when Pickle is out of his house (he hates the roof coming off and runs out of the house and hides). So I've stopped doing it with him and just leave him to enjoy the darkness!

Also love the wheel Did you use a stencil or something to get the shapes so perfect! It is quite inspiring!
