What species is my hamster?
Hey guys! Yesterday I rescued a dwarf hamster who I have named Ace. However, this is my first dwarf and I can't tell what species he is, a Russian Dwarf or a Winter White. I was hoping someone more experienced would be able to tell. He is the darker of the two (I didn't feel comfortable rescuing both of them).

Re: What species is my hamster?
Hello there and welcome to Hamster Central,
Ace's colour is pretty much what I'd expect to see on a Normal Winter White however, given the fact that he was in a cage with a hamster that is closer to that of a Russian Campbell colouring and his unknown background, he is almost certainly a Hybrid... that is that somewhere in his ancestry there will be hamsters of both Russian Campbells and Winter White.
This is nothing to worry about and Hybrids can make lovely pets but they can be more prone to diabetes and neurological issues so that's something you'll need to be aware of.

Hi and welcome to HC!
Congratulations on your lovely new family member Ace.
It always makes me happy when a Gumtree hamster finds a forever home where he's loved and wanted.
I hope that you've moved him out of the awful Spelos cage and into a decent sized cage with a sand bath and plenty of things for him to do.

Re: What species is my hamster?
Thank you for your answers! I'll make sure to keep an eye out for any potential hybrid problems. Ace's new cage has over 800 sq inches of space so I'm hoping that's enough for him, he utterly adores his sand bath and it's so cute watching him roll about in it. :) He hasn't eaten much which worries me slightly, just putting it down to stress at the moment but if it continues, I'll make sure to take him to a vet.

Re: What species is my hamster?
Congrats on getting little Ace! He must be so happy to have a sand bath & a lovely big cage now.
It may take him a while to settle & adjust to the change, they don’t really eat very much compared to a Syrian ham so it may be that he’s just eating less than you would expect. What do you feed him? If it’s different to what he’s been used to it will take him a while to adjust to that too, it’s best to feed a dwarf specific diet, just in case you’re not sure about the best food for him then you can find a good mix at Rodipet.

Re: What species is my hamster?
My previous hamster was a Syrian who also happened to be a pig when it came to food so I'm probably just not used to it. I'm feeding him a homemade mix at the moment (and supplementing with extra protein since he's a baby) which contains Harry Hamster, the food he was previously on, so he should be okay with it. I am considering switching onto a diet more suitable for dwarf hamsters though since some of the pieces seem a bit big.

800 sq inches! Oh, he is a lucky hamster and has landed on his paws living with you.

Re: What species is my hamster?
The pieces in Harry Hamster are a bit chunky & not ideal for a hybrid, if you decide to change just do it gradually introducing a small amount of the new food & build up over a couple of weeks so his digestion can adapt to the new food.
