Default Muffin's Enclosure

My hamster Muffin lives in a 55 gallon Aqeon tank, she has a section of her cage that has over 6 inches of bedding and the rest of the cage has about 3 inches. She has a water dish and I scatter feed her. She has over 10 chews in her cage and for bedding I use white Kaytee clean & cozy mixed in with Oxbow botanical hay. I gave her an 11 inch Woodent Wheel and she has a mossy cave hideout, a small wooden hut, a sea grass tee pee and a cork round that is partially under the deep section of the bedding but leads out into the area that has her water dish, her chews and hides. That probably sounds really confusing but oh well. (Lol) For her food, I use 50% of the Higgins Sunburst Gourmet Blend and 50% of the Mazuri Rat and Mouse Diet. I am trying to find a sand bath so once I do she will have one in her cage as well. I f you have any suggestions or if there is something I need to please let me know. Thank you!

Wink Re: Muffin's Enclosure

Wow! Muffins seems to be living in heaven! Your hamster is really lucky!

I'm not sure if you have an IKEA near your home, but they sell some great baking trays that make an awesome sand bath! (try IKEA mixtur)

If not, then maybe look into the dollar store, for they also sell some really chep and cute dishes!

If all is not well, then you can also just use a high sided plate from your kitchen!

I hope this helped!

I would definitely switch the diet to exclusively Higgins Vita Garden as it is more species appropriate than Higgins Sunburst(Mazuri also isn't very high quality in general despite being popular). For sand, just plain dye free children's play sand is the safest and most economical choice but you have to rinse, sift, and bake it to make it safe to use.

For the actual sand bath itself, you might find good deals on decently sized glass baking dishes at Home Goods and similar stores that sell things for less than the typical retail cost. A large enough glass food storage container without the lid on would also potentially work if you only saw those and not any glass baking dishes. I would avoid plastic though as it holds odor easily and would potentially get chewed which isn't safe.
