Snowflake bedding must read
MODS can move this to a more appropriate section or sticky if needed.
I've seen a lot of people using snowflake woodshavings bedding for hamsters and other small animals. I saw some in the shop and noticed it said 'mixed wood' but didn't say WHAT wood, so I emailed the company. Turns out it's PINE, SPRUCE and CEDAR!
Please don't use this for your hamsters as it's incredibly dangerous.
Below I have attached the email confirming the above

Re: Snowflake bedding must read
Thank you for doing the research. I have used Snowflake in the past for the playpen bins but will take it off my shopping list.
I currently use woodchips in the playbins produced in a sawmill within the county i live in but can't find a list of the woods they use on the packet. I'll have to get in contact with them.

Re: Snowflake bedding must read
Thank you for this. Someone else mentioned recently that it may not be just pine. It is very helpful because previously snowflake was seen to be one of the better qualities of pine bedding if people did use wood shavings. If a bag doesn’t say pine, kiln dried and dust extracted then don’t use it. There are so many alternative beddings to wood shavings now anyway.

Re: Snowflake bedding must read
I've posted on this before, but a dedicated thread for it is really good. I personally only found out after being interested in trying to get it shipped into the US but doing deeper research just in case which ended up being extremely important. Sometimes products can be commonly used or popular without being safe - in this case it was a specific brand of wood shavings, but it could even be a seemingly very safe toy or any other product.
A good rule to go by I've found is if a wood shaving or any wood product for that matter isn't of a specified wood species just don't buy it. It definitely goes beyond just wood shavings and I've even seen, for example, somewhat popular wood toys(Niteangel brand) be confirmed as unsafe wood species and in that particular scenario the toy was made from cedar. Some people might get lucky with these things and not experience serious issues but it is always important(and quite frankly mandatory for their safety) to only use truly safe wood species within the environment of any hamsters!
I also wanted to mention that some alternative non-wood substrates can also be dangerous in different ways. Some hemp for example does use citronella which should not be used for hamsters, although Aubiose specifically is pure hemp and nothing added so it is a perfectly safe choice as long as you're not unfortunate enough to have an allergic reaction to hemp.

Re: Snowflake bedding must read
Yes and thank you Amityville for the heads up about citronella in some hemp. Important to read labels. I’d just like to add that any wood bedding - even safe hardwood like aspen - can cause allergy in a hamster. Not all hamsters but some - they can be allergic to any type of wood bedding.
Paper based seems to be the way to go!

Re: Snowflake bedding must read
Hi everyone - I'm leaving this thread on the forum however for now it is being closed. I am currently in contact with Snowflake to confirm and give them the chance to explain from their side or else the thread becomes a 'name and shame' which breaks our forum rules so I hope you understand.
Please be sure to research yourself what type of substrate you choose and make an informed choice based on that.
