Re: Foster hamsters
Romy's age and background will remain a mystery.
She's the one from the park whose owner threatened to throw her in the river if no one takes her.
She arrived here thin but quickly put on weight and became quite round. I had never taken in a rescue hamster without knowing where they had come from so had to take the possibility of a pregnancy into account.
It's such a shame. Maybe just as well hamsters don't contemplate the meaning of life and simply get on with things.

I remember Romy's story. She did gain weight so suddenly. It really is such a shame but I am hoping the scan does not reveal anything serious.

Re: Foster hamsters
Very sad news about Romy.
After the scan, the vet and i agreed that it would be kinder to pts her now. There is just too much wrong with her and the last thing i wanted was for Romy to die a slow death of cancer.
It all happened so fast and reminds me of Clarissa's demise.
If surgery would have been an option to save Romy's life and to provide her with a good life, i would have gone for it.
Clarissa or finance did not influence my decision.
Romy was such a lovely and trusting hamster and desrved some happiness. Sadly, it was not meant to be.

Re: Foster hamsters
Ria, I really am so so sorry. This has brought tears to my eyes. You have made the kindest decision for Romy. My thoughts are with you.

Re: Foster hamsters
So sorry to hear this. It sounds like the kindest thing and she had a lovely time with you in her last days, with good care.

Re: Foster hamsters
Thank you all for your kind words.
When the vet examined Romy and found the lumps, i could tell by Romy's body language that she was in pain, even with the Metacam. The vet noticed too and we both thought that there was more going on than an uti or gynea problem.
I still feel bad about not having had Betsy put to sleep a day or two sooner. I waited until she refused her Metacam and didn't read into her body language well enough. I can't change that now but i can try and make sure that this will never happen again. Metacam is a very useful and effective drug but it has it's limits.

Re: Foster hamsters
I think it can be really hard to know what to do when a little one is poorly. I have regrets about not having a past animal put to sleep sooner too. What is lovely is, Romy ended her days with so much love and wonderful care.

Re: Foster hamsters
I've just buried Romy under a petal shaped slab in the garden where all the others have been laid to rest.
Romy's coffin is her beloved cork log.
I planted carrots and kale around the stones and some flowers in pots. Play well at the rainbow bridge little Romy.

That sounds beautiful and perfect for Romy.
