Do they think people will hoard rodents as food?
The issue is that in the UK people are being told to only go out for essential shopping and a few other reasons, and everyone that goes out to buy a hamster is another person out that doesn't need to be. Every animal we own results in trips outside for food and vet care, and while that can't be neglected for the animals we already have, there's no need to be buying new animals. Families are also more likely to all go out together to buy a pet, which is a lot of people in one store.

I think it's down to the fact that in the UK we are pretty much in a case of lockdown so only essential trips (to buy food and medication, access medical facilities etc) are permitted. Essential trips includes purchasing pet food and bedding but does not include purchasing new pets so I guess to be responsible, they have removed the option.

As a breeder and Publicity Officer for The National Hamster Council, I have seen an increase in the amount of people asking for availabe hamsters however many club breeders are also not willing to rehome until this lockdown has lifted.

Does anyone know if P@h do long-haired syrians? I really want to adopt a syrian and as a lot of them will be put up for adoption due to their age I think after this lockdown would be a good time. Also I have my heart set on a long-haired syrian male but I could always be swayed.

Its a bit of an unknown what will happen with pet stores etc after lockdown periods end but when hamster shows start up again, maybe you could go along to one as there are often hamsters available

I think the rush to get pets was as soon as the lockdown was announced, so as to get sorted before they couldn't go out any more. There may be some rare exceptions in a case of emergency possibly if rescue places ask for help.
