He will go a bit frantic if there is no food in the bowl. It is their instinct to forage and hoard every day. He will be hoarding it somewhere - they eat very little. So put 1 tablespoon out each day. Don't leave him with an empty food bowl or he'll panic. They like routine also and to know the food will be there about the same time each day,

I should just leave him to sort himself out. Hoards can be left for a very long time - until a substrate clean needs doing - and then you'll find it and can "prune" it if it's a bit large ie take the bottom half out that is the oldest food but always leave some hoard behind and add some new food if you've had to remove some).

That is good news he is nesting outside of the potty but he may get stressed if you keep checking too much and start having some abnormal behaviours. I would just check the potty every 3 or 4 days - if it's used/peed in, empty it and replace the sand. Otherwise I would resist lifting the lid or he won't settle easily. If it's a bit whiffy for a week or so it won't do any harm. In about a week when you check his potty, see if his nest is whiffy - if it is you might need to remove a bit of it but put new strips of toilet paper out next to the house so he can rebuild it. Eventually he will just be peeing in the potty and his nest will stay clean.

No He isn't sleeping out the potty I mean he dragged some tissue out the potty, but he is still sleeping in it, but I've not seen him pee in it or anything..... just asking if the tissue he pulled out of the potty was dirty, it's why he removed it.

been checking on it less and less, I guess just gotta learn to leave it,

thanks for the food info, ill be refilling the bowl more often now.

so I did remove the ladder last night as I've seen him climb up and get down without issue, he seems to do this more instead of the ramp.

so woke up and seen some food gone, so I know he is handling it ok, so much more space now without the ramp.

like I said, only thing I see in the potty is poo but never see or feel any pee, so not sure %100., i DO SMELL pee coming from there but I never find it when I do look.

I've not checked for a couple days, but I only do it when he's on his wheel.

.
Same with one of my dwarves. The substrate never feels wet to the touch but i can smell pee when i have a closer sniff.

Maybe it evaporates because they are so small. I just remove the smelly substrate from time to time while my dwarf is in the playpen box.

been a week, so decided to clean the potty out (the place he sleeps) though no pee on the sand, there was lots of poo's (I know they're fine) I did see a couple bits of tissue that looked yellow, but not wet, so i took those out, and put the rest of his bedding back in.. and emptied the poos out, didn't wash the potty out as wanted the scent to remain as he sleeps in it just now... he has peed the other day next to his food bowl, and it wasn't a huge amount, I just wiped it... as if I cleaned it more properly he might pee there again, so he probably was just scent marking it... and he he has not peed there again.

then I put it back in the shoebox, and ripped some new tissue in case he wanted to move some in, outside, and the next morning I woke up all the tissue was gone lol.

he seems to be settling in quite good, as now he is getting used to certain sounds etc.. I did put my hand near him on the wheel, and he stopped and sniffed and went back to running (so I assume he doesn't consider my hand food) or he would of chased it.)

That sounds great. Yes the yellow bits are a give away Just keep putting more toilet paper strips out. Sounds like he’s got the hang of nest building.

He is getting into normal hamster behaviours now - adapting to his house, deciding where to build his nest and stacking up a hoard (and snacking in bed). He will be happy he can bury his hoard under his nest, snack in bed and have an ensuite bathroom in privacy I am sure he is getting very busy organising all this

still not pet him or handled him, he is still young, I don't know something holds me back, trusting him completely..

a part of me feels It's fine, but I have some doubt still.. and he wont completely trust me till ill trust him first.

had him for like a couple weeks, in those weeks he has growing in size... really don't want to wait to long to start touching him or handling him, my hope was as he got older he may calm down a little bit, and not be as nervous (He isn't as nervous as when he first moved in) that is understandable a new place and all that.

when I first was opening his shoe box, he looked and stared in disgust lol .. but now he just continues what he is doing. he has improved alot, but still not got to the stage of touching him.

yesterday he was at his bowl and put my hand behind him (Behind the cage bars) and he just totally went turbo mode, flying off the level, he wasn't hurt, he just went on this wheel (again and carried on) lol.

I know he has took food from my fingers, but still not put food in the palm of my hand yet..
