Thumbs down Re: New hamster.

Thanknyou for the update. Are you waiting for Tyson to walk onto your hand? I'm just wondering because my Syrian never did.
I used to take him out of his cage by letting him walk into a mug with a treat in it if i remember right then put him on my lap or sat in the playpen with him on my lap. He didn't like the bath tub.I stroked his back at first while he was eating a treat like a few sunflower seeds then lifted him up gently by putting my fingers around him from above, only a short lift at first then increased the time and height gradually until he got used to me picking him up. I did wear gardening gloves at first until we trusted each other. I still pick him up the same way and he comes to the door when he wants to come out of his cage which doesn't happen that often because he prefers his own company most of the time.
One of my other hamsters doesn't like to get picked up from above but she walks onto my hand.
Does your hamster want to come out of his cage? If yes, then you could set up a playpen or hamster proof area and try to handle him gently, wear gloves if you're nervous of getting bitten and put him back in his cage should he get stressed then try again next day.
Have you had a look around on the Forum under Behaviour for threads relating to taming tips?
It can be a confidence thing. I sometimes collect rescue hamsters but always transfer them into my carrier with a jug because i don't have the confidence to pick them up with my hands in case i get bitten. I take them to the rescue and the lady who runs it picks them up and handles them because the majority of hamsters don't bite or bite only if really frightened which she would be able to tell.

he seems like that just doesn't seem interested more into his wheel, I have put him in the bath tub few times, but he just wants to try to get out, when I did put him on myself he just jumps off. and really don't have a play pen or anything like that, but he seems happy and does his own thing.

So I just noticed on one of his feet. Looks like some sort of lesion well not on his foot more like his ankle above his foot.. Not sure if they have ankles but it's best I can describe.. Any one know what it could be?.. Its not looking like its bothering him. He's still drinking and eating. And running on his wheel.

I did take a couple last night, sorry it isn't a very good picture, but it's what I could get!

feel like it's pretty recent as it was only noticed last night.

he does like climbing on his bars sometimes, maybe that's how it happened but not too sure. but like I said he still ran on his wheel all night last night, and still eating and drinking.

That does look sore, I would run your hand everywhere in his cage see if you can find anything sharp. In pain they are likely to still eat and drink, they are prey animals and won’t give any signals of being ill, it would make them an easy target in the wild if they did. I would talk to my vet and maybe send them a photo, I would worry if it became infected, got red, hot, oozy, smelly, you would need to act quickly if this happens as they go down hill from infection quickly.

What wheel and cage do you have? If you have a photo we can look and see what may have caused injury. Assume it isn’t a mesh wheel as those can cause injury?

I would dab the side with saline and keep an eye on it- it’ll either heal up or get infected. To make the saline just put a teaspoon of salt into a pint of boiling water. Stir it up and let it dissolve. Let the water go cold. When it’s cold you can just dab the sore - use a cotton bud or corner of a cloth - not too wet, you don’t want to soak him. It speeds up healing.

Don't worry, I am aware of the mesh wheels, it's 12" bucket wheel that i got from ebay, that someone makes , no mesh wheel, I am sure I put a video on this a few months back, him running on it lol.. to be honest the picture does make it look worse than it looks in person. I am watching it, so far it isn't looking infected, seems to be healing fine as of now. only thing in the cage is wheel, chew toys, water bottle etc all the things you'd expect nothing I can see would cause it, unless he climbed the bars and thats what caused it, but not
seen him climb the bars for a little bit.

I must confess, had him for a few months now, and I have not held him or picked him up yet... he seems to know my hand is safe now, as if I put a treat up the bars he wants it, but if I put my hand near the cage he doesn't try to eat my fingers, so I am thinking think is the time to start handling him, wanted to leave him awhile to settle in but.. it's been a little longer than I wanted.

I mean I have gave him a treat directly from my fingers when the cage was open and he seems fine.. so think I should start handling him..

Bath tub taming is a good way to start handling him. A bit at a time. It seems quite an unusual place on top of his foot for the sore. It does suggest he might have trapped his foot in something. Look for any small gaps - sometimes a gap between a ladder and a shelf or wider gaps in bendy bridge can cause an issue. Also I'd check the wheel really carefully to see if there is anywhere he could get a foot caught. Many wheels can have the odd safety issue. Nails in wood toys and houses can be another culprit - especially if they've chewed the wood and exposed a nail.

I buy non toxic sand from a company called school specialty. I don't know where you are but you could check it out. I didn't have any luck with the chinchilla bath dust, so if you need some of that I have a jar I could send you. I also used snake aspen and Sammy would go in a certain corner of that. Good luck with whatever means works for you.
