Default Providing two sand areas

I've always provided a sand box for my dwarf hamsters, which they seem to love rolling in and having a sand bath in. Recently though, all four of my hamsters have started using their sand boxes as toilets and I'm sure that they wouldn't enjoy bathing in the same sand.

I'm going to go and get them each a second sand box but my question is, do you think they will use one for a toilet and the otherfor rolling and bathing in or is it likely that they will wee in both?

Impossible to predict what a hamster is going to do because they very much have a mind of their own. In my experience they do the opposite of what we expect them or would like them to do.

Our Percy quite happily rolls in his playpen sand and then pees in it but has other peeing places in his cage.

Pee'ed in sand forms clumps which are easily scooped out with the little scoop that comes with hamster toilets so its not really an issue. Mine all have their individual scoops and tiny strainers with handles to sieve bits out of their sand

Try it if you think they need two sand areas and see what happens.

Our Syrian hamster has 2 sand-trays. One she uses as a toilet (the larger of the two), the other she digs in and kicks the sand out of. She doesn’t roll in the small one as it isn’t big enough, she just uses it as a toy.

She only pees in the larger one and doesn’t pee anywhere else in her cage.

All hamsters are different, you can try your hamsters with two sandboxes and see how they get on.

I would say there is a good chance they will pee in both & not mind a bit about rolling in it!

Do they not need a separate rolling/sand bathing area if they pee in their sand box? Is it ok to just let them have one sand box in which they roll and pee?

I'd say Yes. Just remove the pee clumps, top up the sand when needed and they'll be as happy as a pig in...mud x
