Deaf hamster?
I have been meaning to ask this for ages.
Star, adopted Syrian last year - old girl - probably 2 when I got her and 2.5 now.
I think she is deaf.
She has never ever froze at a sound, she never ever meerkats, and she sniffs like no other hamster I have ever know. I wondered if she overcompensates with her sense of smell and whiskers touching things because she can't hear.
so opinions please?
Thanks.

Re: Deaf hamster?
I've watched your videos of Star and always thought that she was a champion sniffer, before you even mentioned it, ever so cute though the way her nose works overtime.
Does Star not respond at all to her name or your voice when you call her? I think the meerkating is an individual thing. Edwina runs meerkats runs meerkats etc but i have never seen Gordon meerkating.
I take it that you have tried making a loud noise without getting a reaction from her. Animals can get similar ailments to humans so i think that its quite possible that Star has gone deaf through age.

Re: Deaf hamster?
Hi Ria, yes she has been a big sniffer/twitchy nose/whiskers ever since i got her. Funny you noticed that too.
When I first got her she would sit on my chest and just sniff for about 10 minutes, no way would she do that now, once she got used to me and was confident, she was off and there was no stopping her. but her nose still goes like the clappers.
She wouldn't react to anything these days, she likes to sleep a lot! She is a very old lady now. I've always talked to her, even though I thought she wasn't hearing a thing I was saying.Yes, she never reacts to any noise, and nothing spooks/startles her as like I said I think she can't hear it.
Like you said maybe she was just deaf with her old age by the time I adopted her.
I just wanted to discuss it on here and see what other peoples opinions were.
